2011-2012 data for c-sections by hospital. I have never seen this level of detail on this and wanted to share!

Canada - CesareanRates.com

What do you think of the numbers you see?

Wow!!! I am quite familiar with almost all of the hospitals in MB (my family is quite accident prone, and we happen to travel (camp) a lot in all areas of the province

SOme of these numbers really surprised me, and others were just sad. If I remember correctly the WHO recommends a c section rate of no higher than 15%... so some of the MB hospitals have doubled that! Scary!

The good news is that the hospital where I plan to deliver, although high on the rate of c sections is highest on the rate of Vbacs! AND I feel confident that being in Midwife care (really really hard to get in MB) will lower my chances of having a section as well.
I think the message this sends is clear though, we have a huge problem in the way we see pregnancy and birth as a medical condition in our country! With rates over 15% Dr.s are putting mom's at greater risk by having major surgery than the risk of delivering normally.

Funny you should bring this up, because I had a good cry the other night about the possibility of having one. I watched a video that made me so emotionally raw, of a momma who had 2 previous sections that were traumatic and she missed out on important bonding with her babies... with her 3rd she was her own advocate, and ended up getting skin to skin with her baby on the OR table, and they only took the baby from her to test/measure etc, and by the time she was wheeled to recovery baby was on her chest again, riding down the hallway! It really made me feel less afraid! She took a 'not-so-great' situation and made the absolute best of it!

All three of my were sections, all under different circumstances and with different doctors. I have to agree, if you are put in a situation where a section is unavoidable, speak up! I didn't know that with my first and my second was too much of an emergency for me to care, but with my third I spoke up, I didn't have my arms tied down, I got oxygen only as needed so I didn't have to wear the mask the whole time, and I got to snuggle with my baby on the table.

I'm actually not surprised to see the numbers for Ontario. Although some that were at 50 and 60 per cent did surprise me.

RVH (the local hospital) has a 27.45 c-section rate and only a 6.5 vbac rate, im not really surprised that it seems like most hospitals rates are pretty high

its really interesting to see the data layed out like that in such great detail

My hospital is 22% with a 19% vbac rate. I am going to work for my vbac when the time comes!!!

The ones that were like 30%+ are crazy!

What I would like to know is the breakdown between emergency/unplanned and planned ones (placenta previa for example).

I also would like to know the difference between OB, GP and Midwife rates, as well as how many were transfered home births etc etc.

As it's laid out though it is quite interesting! Holy cow! 50-60%!!! Not that high here, thank goodness! I just went to my first Healthy Baby meeting today. there were 5 of us who were pregnant. I'm the only one delivering in Canada, and the only one without a scheduled c section or induction date!!! I'm shocked!

The hospital where I had the girls has a 22% section rate and a 35% VBAC rate, it no longer has a OB department and delivery room.

The hospital where I had DS has a 17% section rate and a 40% VBAC rate.
