I am wondering when i will be able to go on mat leave.. My supervisor keeps asking me when i'll be leaving and he has no clue how it works. I would like to stop working as soon as i can... hopefully around 7 months... does anyone know the earliest your mat leave can start? i know some of the other girls at my work left a couple months before they were due. i don't if that was due to medical or not. I plan on talking to EI tomorrow in person but i thought i'd try here first.

Hi there. According to the Gov't of Canada web site you can take mat leave up to 8 weeks before the expected due date. Here is a link to the site, it should have all the info you need!

You can go on medical at anytime really.
I went off at 24 weeks because my job was too stressful.
you just have to talk to your doctor about it. I really wouldnt suggest going on mat leave as early as possible because then its less time home with the baby afterwards.

I was on medical from may-end of july 2005 and then mat leave starting the end of july and my baby was born the beginning of september.
my mat leave ran out in july 2006

I also took medical leave, a month before I was due. I just told the doctor I was way too tired (teaching 30 12 year olds is exhausting on the best days, let alone when you're 8+ months pregnant) and he put me on medical leave. So I got full pay for the last month, although I was off on medical leave. Once DD arrived I went on mat leave.

You can start maternity leave up to 8 weeks before your due date. If you want to stop working earlier, you will have to take medical leave.
