Hi Everyone,
My name's Cynde. I'm a stay at home mom with 3 grown-and-moved-out daughters. We also have 2 sons at home, Tommy 11 and Sam 14.
We're in Winnipeg and would like to home-school our 14 yr. old. He's in Grade 8 (we started him a year late because of his size) and wants to do the extra work it would take to complete 8 & 9 this year and go back to school, entering Grade 10 in the fall '08.
We have experience in home-schooling. When we lived in B.C. they happily supplied all lesson plans, worksheets and accessories at no cost. We sent in a package of completed work each week or so, they marked it and sent it back. It was wonderful. Manitoba does it a little differently.
In Manitoba, home-schooling does not appear to be encouraged. Apart from "Distance Learning" students, lesson plans, curriculum, or anything supportive does not seem to be available without large fees attached. It seems a little backward to us that if you want to home-school in Manitoba, you must jump through so many hoops. The benefits to the child are obvious but they certainly don't make it easy.
We would be most appreciative if anyone knows of any online Canadian curriculum - from any province - lesson plans, worksheets, or free distance learning programs that we can access for Sam. He's ready to do the work - we just aren't willing to pay for it if we don't have to.
Thanks so much for helping.
Cynde
