My first goal was to finish in under an hour... my time was 54:20 so that was accomplished. My second goal was to enjoy it, and boy, did I!

The first mile and a half was hard- I probably didn't have an adequate warm-up and that part was going up a gradual slope and into a 15mph wind. But about halfway through mile 2 we turned out of the wind on to a really beautiful (and mostly down-hill) gravel road.. it was pretty smooth sailing from there until the beginning of mile 4 I was getting shooting pains on the outside of my hips (never felt those before, weird). I had to walk through that water station, then started jogging again. The family were close to the finish, with signs and everything. That was really exciting and I must have picked up the pace w/o realizing I still had more than a quarter mile (on sand for gosh's sakes!) to go. My legs and lungs were trying to convince me to just slow back down, but my brain said "We are NOT WALKING through this finish!" My brain won. Overall, I'm really proud of myself for doing it, although the competitor in me really regrets being the slowest in my age group (but not last overall).

I learned a lot- first of all that there really isn't much to be nervous about. The atmosphere was really easy-going. The hardest part was getting up early enough to make the hour-long drive. Second, I need to do a good warm-up and not worry about either looking silly or tiring myself out. I was too nervous and self-conscious at the start. I need to study my own pacing more, but I guess that will come with experience. At the award ceremony one of the boys asked if I was going to get a medal. I told him, "I didn't run fast enough this year." I didn't think about it until after I said it, but I think that's a darn good attitude. I did good this time, next time I can do even better. We spent the rest of the afternoon having lunch and then doing some shopping in town. Hubby found my a trophy at the thrift store. It's perfect, LOL!

Sorry to write a novel.

YAY! I got teary eyed at the family w/ signs part . I'm so sappy.

Glad to hear you are planning on another. Do they just have one available per year in that area? Should we officially call you a runner?

I plan to do more races- I'm finding as summer gets in full swing that there is more available than I originally thought there would be. I'm planning to do a race on the 25th which will be 2.9 miles; a 5K 4th of July weekend; maybe a race the end of July; a 10K in September. That's as far as I've planned, think that's a pretty good start.

Hmm.. am I officially a runner yet? I don't know. Sometimes I feel like I am, and sometimes I feel like I'm just a middle-aged, overweight Mom trying her best.

Good for you Jennifer!

How sweet and supportive of your family to have signs for you! Isn't it such a nice feeling to see people cheering you on? Makes a huge difference!

I think it's great you had a goal for yourself and you accomplished it. I think that's one of the most important things in working out. now you have a starting point and it only gets better from there.

If you really get into running, I bet you'll find there are as many races around as you're willing to run.

Thanks, ya'll.

Whit, I'm hoping we can all do the next one together- it's a fund raiser for the only crisis pregnancy center in the area, and I'd like to help them boost their numbers. It's a shorter course and a fun walk/run... so I think they could totally do it. I've been trying to encourage them to join me sometimes w/o being pushy. But at the same time, some days I feel like my run is MINE and I don't want to share that time, KWIM? I'm learning to be selfish sometimes!

Heck yeah! I run bike or swim for an hour or more every day and that's definitely MY time! I don't blame you for wanting that to yourself. We mommies need that time to ourselves to 'decompress'. Don't feel bad about it!

How exciting!!! So happy for you and yes, you are officially a runner

That's the part that bothers me--DH and the boys or anyone for that matter come cheer me on--just the people I run with. So you are one very lucky mama!!!
