It's because the kid was having juice in a bottle at night before bed and then not brushing his teeth so the juice was sitting on his teeth all night! juice in a bottle rots the teeth

I don't think so Tracy. Do you put him to bed with his bottle or do you feed it him then put him to bed without it? I think it's as the girls say, the kids are having sugary drinks in the bottle and have it all day long. Or perhaps put to bed with the bottle therefore falling asleep with it in their mouth.

Kirsty still has a bedtime bottle and I don't see me taking it away anytime soon. I'll give her a month or so then try to switch to a cup... infact I might try then once she's gotten over this cold/bug/whatever.

I'm lucky in that she wont drink any juice, it's always just tap water. I plan to keep that going as long as possible. However I did say to DH last night we MUST get her into a routine of twice daily teeth-brushing, she resists getting it done and ashamed to admit we can go up to 2 days without brushing

I've started getting her to do hers with me in the morning, and we do them right after her dinner too.

its not at all Lucy. It can happen to kids that just drink from bottles and beakers normally.

In a former life before children I was a microbiologist working in kings dental hospital specialising in dental research.

it is termed nursing bottle caries, it happens when a child has a bottle and the milk ( or juice) will pool around the teeth, anything high in natural sugars will cause tooth decay. it can also happen if the child is drinking out of a beaker. Juice is obviously higher in sugars but milk also contains a high amount.

genetics also plays a part in it, if genetically you have weaker teeth then you are more prone to it. there are also many other factors that are taken into consideration as well.

Tracy, dont be worried, these are extreme cases and many other things than the bottles could have contributed to it

We were taught in our college course (Childcare & Education) the best method to help avoid tooth decay is using a straw cos it gets the liquid to the back of the mouth and swallowed so it's passing the majority of the toofers.

Yes I did and for some of them I jsut thought to myself "NO" is the word you looking for - for instance the kid that had 4-5 lollypops a day... I mean thats surely common sense that it's bad for your teeth!

Yes i did and as of today Christian is being weaned off his bottles. He only has milk in them at naptimes but the thought of his teeth rotting made me feel sick. I do brush them but ughhh i felt horrible. Got to do it at some point may as well be today

my neighbour's kids teeth rotted and they didn't even have bottles... they were breastfed. I really think genetics plays a part in this as well!

I think alot of it has to do with genes too. Both my kids had a bottle until they were 3, and drank milk and tea from it and they both have good teeth.
