They work for me, but not for everyone. I get comptete negatives usually (although some people report they always have a line, I don't) and then the day before O, I get a line and the next test I usually get a +ive.
I had the chance to test how they work for me because I was lucky enough to get a run of regular cycles after spending a few months on the BCP to help regulate me. Good Luck!
I don't know about counting the +ives, I always had AF about 2 weeks after, so I was pretty sure I was O'ing, as getting AF coincided with my +ive OPK. I think you would only count it as a +ive if you get AF a reasonable amount of time after the +ive result?!?! But I am not sure, I am certainly not as knowledgable as the rest of the ladies here!
I've always had success w/ OPKs, but I think everyone's different. And for that matter, every month can be different, even for the same woman. But don't assume that having PCOS means they won't work for you. If you're not sure if you're ovulating, you may want to consider tracking as many signs as you can (temps, cervical position, CM, etc.) in addition to using OPKs, and let Fertility Friend figure out if you ovulated or not. It's not foolproof, of course, and getting AF doesn't necessarily mean you have ovulated, but at least if you can go to your doc w/ charts showing your signs, he or she might have a better idea of where to start in testing you for ovulation, putting you on clomid or femara, or whatever. I'm a big fan of being prepared like that ;0)
FWIW, I never really trusted myself in reading OPKs (the whole "line is as dark or darker than the control line" thing was just too complicated), so I invested in a fertility monitor. It's pretty much dummy-proof - and I got pg on my second cycle using it! You can find them on eBay for less than the stores, though it's still a chunk of change. I'd use the affordable OPKs for awhile and see what kind of results you get before investing.
Anyway, my two cents.....good luck! Glad to see you back, Amy!
