For those of you who have taken Metformin, did it upset your stomach? My Dr. warned me that it may cause some nausea and diarrhea, and she was right! I've only been on it for a few days once a day, and next week I have to bump it up to twice a day. Is it going to get worse? Did it go away for you?

For some people it gets better. Sometimes it depends on the foods you eat with it. If you keep taking it and feel you really can't do it I suggest asking your Dr for the extended release. I haven't taken it personally but I've heard it doesn't have the extreme side effects as the regular Metformin. Good luck to you!!! Hopefully the side effects get better for you in time!

personally, I've never had any GI problems when it came to taking met but i know many women on here have had trouble with it. what i suggest is taking the met at bedtime to reduce the side effects. If that doesn't help, i'd ask your doctor about Metformin ER (extended Release) i believe thats what its called. I know several women switched from regular metformin to that one and have had better toleration of it.

Good Luck!

I take a total of 1000mg a day. Yes, when I first started it was horrible. After a while the nausea went away. I have been taking it for years now and I still have diahrrea. However, it is not a horrible side affect. I just deal with it. Give it a month before you decide if you want to stop taking it. Good luck!

I wouldn't waste your time on regular met. Just go straight to Met extended release. Even with that, I had some nausea during the ramp up phase, but about a week after reaching my peak dosage of 2000mg a day the nausea went away. The nausea only comes back if I stop and start again.

While the initial nausea is annoying, the benefits of met far outweigh the side effects. You should definitely stick with it if you can - it's been a miracle drug for many.

I didn't have any trouble at 500mg, but at 1000mg I had such horribly diarrhea that I couldn't even control it. Which was really just not possible to deal with since I can't spend 24/7 on the toilet just in case. I've also heard good things about Metformin ER, but haven't tried it myself.

I'm so sorry you are having the dreaded GI problems out of your Met Rx. It's true, Met ER/XR is your best bet as s/e are much less with it.

I'm one of the lucky ones who's s/e typically go away after taking it a week or so. I've been on it so long now, I feel no different-- UNLESS I go off of it for a month or so, then I have to go through the initial s/e again until my body gets accustomed to it...

Good luck and I hope things get better for you very soon!

Hey! Sorry that you are having problems on the Metformin! I have been on it for about 6 weeks and I take 500 3xa day at meal times...it really doesn't mess with me too bad...BUT I have bad GI problems already so maybe I just don't realize it or something. But one hint I have heard is don't eat a lot of carbs!!!

If it bothers you to much i have heard to go ahead and try the xr.
Hope that helps!

I was on metformin (500 mg 3 x day) and at first it did cause a lot of nausea. But it went away after a week or so. What I did was start off by taking half the dosage for a few days and then work up to the full dosage.
