OK, so ever since I joined JM I've been a come and go member of this board. So I'm sure every time nobody knows who I am, but I came with a question...

Do you practice NFP?

It seems that even though the church supports it, a lot of my Catholic friends don't, so I was just wondering who does...

Yeah, we practice NFP.

I think a lot of Catholics are either unaware of NFP or underestimate the importance of it. I don't know about cradle Catholics, but being a convert and the whole process of going through RCIA has covered nothing about NFP, it's something that DH & I had to research on our own. Even our pre-marital classes instructor just breezed through NFP and did not discuss it much at all. I don't think many Catholics realize that using contraceptives is a mortal sin (well, I suppose if you're completely unaware then it's not)... or they just don't care.

I don't have any close Catholic friends IRL, but just here on JM, I've seen a few Catholics who go to Church every Sunday, send their kids to a Catholic school, and believe they're "devout", but in another thread they'd mention using b/c... I think many are just uneducated on the matter or in denial. I don't know which one

BTW - feel free to stick around I did see you around here before. And on the NFP board!

Yes we do! we used NFP to help us conceive our first son after a miscarriage. Since then we haven't had a need to avoid pregnancy and I still don't have my cycle back - our second son is 6 months old - but we would only ever use NFP in our marriage and never any birthcontrol or barrier.

Obviously, we do. Out of all our Catholic friends in real life, practically all of them use NFP too. There are two things I've learned since I began teaching NFP in our community/parish 4 years ago:

1. There are WAY more NFPers in my parish than I would have imagined! People I never would have expected are actually faithful NFP users!
2. They all think they are the only ones!

I know a couple people IRL that use NFP, but when the topic came up at a playgroup one time there were only 2 of us that use it out of the 6-8 that were there and 4 of us were Catholic.

I was on the pill for 6 years (part prior to becoming Catholic) and at my Unitas meeting the NFP topic brought tears to my eyes. I actually balled. I felt like less of a Catholic because my body was messed up in HS and I was having too many periods (twice a month - about every two weeks) and they couldn't find a reason why. They put me on the pill and it fixed it. I went off the pill when we were getting health insurance the first time to see if the frequent periods came back and ended up pregnant right away. I stayed on it for so long out of fear that I would go back to those paralyzing cycles (I would get pains that would kinda paralyze me on top of the too frequent bleeding).

We do use NFP and it has really enriched our marriage. Almost all of my Catholic friends practice NFP. The student center DH and I met at and have a lot of friends from really made it a goal to educate the students on birth control and what the Church teaches. The diocese required engaged couples to take an NFP course. The diocese I'm in now also makes it a priority, and all the Catholic couples I've met where the topic has come up have said they use NFP.

P.S. You should hang with us more!

Yeah, I want to stick around, I just kinda forget to come here.
And yeah I agree they don't seem to teach this issue enough. I've always had a natural feeling that birth control was wrong, I LATER found out the church agrees...so I am always sad when people do use bc and are Catholic...I think they're missing out to be honest.

I think they're missing out, too I try to inform people if it's possible at all, but it's a topic you can't really discuss with just anyone, so it's tricky.

Yeah, I am sure that is true cuz I'm always surprised to find other NFP users, but I know what bc my real life friends use (the patch, the pill, etc.) and I do have a large group of real life Catholic friends, went to a Catholic school, just kinda found them.

I wish our diocese did that! I really do. I always want somebody who feels the way I do on this topic to talk to, at least I have JM, lol.
