So it is that time of year when Respect Life decorates our churches front lawn with crosses. They always do the number of crosses that are the number of abortions that occur in the U.S. daily (3,200 crosses currently sitting in front of my church...and I won't touch that other than to say...WOW...).

Courtney knew what they were from our discussion about them last year, sorta. She has a friend at school who's mother miscarried a baby either last school year or this. His mother is again pregnant, newly pregnant from when she said the baby's due, so here's happy thoughts that works out.

Anyway, she asked if the crosses were for babies like that. She's 7. Explaining fully the what miscarriage is and what abortion is seems complicated. I tried, but abortion is like this terrible horrible thing that I can't fully explain I feel like. Tips?

*Note, I know I posted something on like this same weekend about the crosses and an event that happened that later turned into like the thread getting locked, so should this happen again, I will move this to heart to heart, I just really think since this is the Catholic Forum people will know we're against abortion.

Natasha is only 5, but if she ever asks, I will outright tell her what both are. She's been questioning the concept of death, and she has also just seen me go through a pregnancy, and I really feel like she'll understand if I explain it to her in basic terms.

Of all the open discussions I have with my girls this is one that never has come up.

I'm not sure how I could explain it. maybe that aportion is when the mom goes to end the pregnancy and miscarriage is when it just happens? man that's a tough one...

Well in my thought, I had outright told her, but I don't think she understood, so I don't know how far to push on the explaining.

That's sort of what I tried to explain on the difference. However, all it made me feel was that when I explained abortion the first time, it obviously didn't get understood.

When my older girls asked when they were younger (Lucas has never asked) I told them that a miscarriage is when God takes a baby to be in Heaven with Him before it is time to be born because it is too poorly to live, an abortion is when a woman decides she doesn't want the baby and doesn't give the baby a chance to live. They seemed to understand the difference.
I can still hear Elijah's voice and see the look in her eyes when she replied "God took Ceilidh because she was too poorly to live, but he gave her a chance because she was born at the right time"

Awwww. It seems to be a time in my life with Courtney for these kind of questions. She said she wanted to read the story I was reading today, I said I didn't think she could understand some of it, but she was welcome to read it. She did and then we had to discuss what "syndrome" was because it was about Downs Syndrome, and of course that is a real life topic right now since the baby had the soft marker for downs, so if the baby ends up with downs it'll be something I'm glad she has already started the conversation on. I don't know if Rock would get any meaning out of that conversation, I'm sure LJ and Amber wouldn't.
