Do you genuflect when you enter the pew at Mass? I just found out recently because of where the tabernacle is in our church, we are apparently not supposed to anymore, or at least not required to. I was shocked, who knew...

I always do as I've done it for as long as I've been able to. Most of our congragation don't, but it's automatic for me to genuflect before entering and after leaving the pew.

Well, and that's why I do it, in our old church we were supposed to.

Yeah, always do...I thought you always should unless the candle wasn't lit (indicating our Lord wasn't in the tabernacle). I'm a neophyte though, so I might be confused. We were also told by an Opus Dei priest that we shouldn't cross ourselves during our genuflection. I thought that strange, but then I noticed that our priest (not the same Opus Dei priest), who is very orthodox, doesn't do the sign of the cross when he genuflects either. Most everyone else does though, except a few others I've seen. Anyone else heard of this...??

Well, our tabernacle is not in the room, because our adoration chapel is behind the church in its own separate door, apparently we don't need to genuflect.

I know nothing about when to do the cross vs. when not to though.

No, you are not supposed to cross. Also, Courtney - you should bow to the altar before entering the pew, and only genuflect if our Lord is in the tablernacle. If He is in the Monstrance, you are to go down on two knees rather than just the right knee. If I am in a church where the tabernacle is not in the sanctuary, I genuflect toward the chapel where He is reposed. (there should be a sanctuary candle burning outside of the chapel door. ) and then bow before the altar before entering the pew.
