So my mother owns my house. I grew up in this house. Two years ago when I moved home from Las Vegas we moved into this house because our house was occupied and we were trying to save money. The plan, get money from the tenant living in our house, and then not spend money on rent because we were staying here. Great plan. Didn't work out that way, but somehow in the end, my parents when they came back to town after my grandfather's death (they were out taking care of him) moved into a new house they bought and left us in this one. Still a great plan, who doesn't like free rent? They didn't charge us, so we stayed.

The one price, they didn't have to move their stuff, I DID. So it has been slow. Over the past like 9 months since they moved into their house I've cleaned it out, and unpacked our stuff from storage in shifts...lots of things make it hard to just do the way you do when you normally move out...like the fact that mom freaks out that I'm giving her too much to do when I bring stuff over.

So anyway, the point of all that story, some of their stuff is still in our house. Like my dad's ridiculously complete and super valued coin collection.

Anyway, because this is my mother's house, she has had a cleaner that comes in (a company) every two weeks for a very long time, and since as I mentioned we weren't intending to leave when we moved in, she didn't cancel them (they were on contract and stuff). So every two weeks they clean the kitchen and bathrooms, or rather they did. Since having Terra my mother decided to discontinue them and go with a person and not a company, a person who BTW does a ton more for a lot less. But she wanted to "help me out" since I have a new baby so this person comes every week and does whatever they can for a few hours. It's super nice.

This is all connected, I promise. Sometime in the past 9 months since I've been moving their stuff out, one of the cleaners, or a really daring burglar, has come into our house, and stole most of my father's coin collection. They went through the whole thing and just took like the most valuable stuff. My opinion is they did this slowly over time because I think some of the coins were here as recently as a couple months ago that are missing now, but I already thought some were missing a couple months ago. I may be mistaken, I'm just not sure.

My father had made a comment when we moved his coin collection, so I vowed never to touch it again, so rather than move it like I'm moving their other stuff, I asked him to do it. So tonight he came to do that. The first thing he picked up he said "That should be heavier" the next one was completely empty. We checked the other two spots in the house with coins, they've been tampered with too. There was a book from the 1950s with values in it, so the values are 50 years old, but the coins dated back all the way to the 1770s! Somebody went through our stuff, found the book, and went through the coins. And they had enough time to go through multiple rooms, including things I didn't even know were here and just steal them.

One of the coins was literally minted in 1778 and is worth a minimum of 10K. Just one of the coins, and 100s of coins were stolen. So the police have been here and are coming back in the morning. Pray for me that they find something. My father collected this stuff with his grandad, it means a lot to him. I feel so guilty. It sat in his parents house, and his house for years without ever having anything happen, he leaves it with us for a year (well two, but I know it was fine last year) and it vanishes...I'm so upset...

Wow..what a terrible nightmare. I hope they have been able to find some clues and that the coins can be recovered. And Lord help the ones who are lost and desperate enough to commit such a crime...

Aw, that's horrible. I hope the police find the person who did it and get your Dad's coins back. Don't feel guilty, it's not your fault at all!

Thanks, the police seem hopeful, Idk if it is likely or not.

So apparently the reason there was never an update is my parents did not pursue the police route. Which makes me sad. They didn't for silly reasons, that I don't want to share on the public board, but if I need to explain for you, I can do it in private. However, I'm hoping they are going to pursue it now, because we just discovered more stuff is missing, and this stuff is quite possibly more scary and quite possibly points to who did it. All 3 things that have been stolen (the coin collection, my mother's pearls and my mother's silver pitcher) were very sentimental because of how my parents came to own them.

The sad thing was once my mother realized things from HER house (and not just our house) were missing, she kept looking and kept finding more missing stuff. And not one of the things stolen (all the previously mentioned stuff), a ruby necklace, a China set, and some other dishware type stuff, was bought by my parents. Nothing. All of it was a gift, or inheritance, so it comes with not only monetary value, which can be replaced, but emotional value that can't. Makes me so sick.

...the necklaces have all been returned...to the drawer, not like by the police, just there they are, like they never left...

I hope the rest of it finds its way back too. It is nice when things just walk off, if they just walk back as well.

The Lord sure does work in mysterious ways! I'm glad some stuff has been found, praying more does soon.

I wish it were mysterious, if I didn't think this made it 100% obvious who did it then I think I'd just think it was a Christmas miracle.

lurking...

Uhhhhhh the necklaces reappearing is completely freaky! It's good that they put them back, but I would be freaked out that they are still going through your stuff. I would change the locks on your house STAT and tell all "cleaning" personnel that you will do the cleaning yourself!

I hope they pursue it with the police now. The thief knew exactly what they were doing and is obviously really gutsy. What next? Cell phones? Keys to the car? Tools in the garage? Find a book of checks and write themselves a check?!

Make sure that person stays out of your house! They are obviously not trustworthy and that would scare me!

*phew* ok I'm done now.

This stuff wasn't in my house, the stuff that returned. The original coin collection was, but everything else that went missing was in my parents house. So I don't get to make any kind of call on it. :/
