What is the musical style at the Mass you usually attend?

Would you go or have you ever gone to a different Mass/parish because of the music?

I'm just curious because of some thinking/research I've been doing and conversations I've had with DH.

The Mass we attend is the youth Mass, so it's more praise and worship style....but also Liturgically correct. Our priest has a real hang-up about sketchy music!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE to sing and it's one of my favorite ways to pray. Obviously, music isn't the reason we go to Mass...when it's good, I have a much easier time entering into prayer during Mass. When it's bad, I find it very distracting and harder to pray. I probably wouldn't switch parishes over it, but it does influence which Mass we attend within our parish.

I'm not sure? Twelve people in the choir and two guitars, and its about double that at Easter and Christmas. I'll be honest, I really miss the music at the Pentecostal and Baptist churches I've attended in the past.

Ours is the "family choir" - the usual if you ask me. I know I get more excited when they sing my favorites, but can't say I've ever changed churches because of the music.

Choir. Like a pretty good choir. I have Masses I avoid at my church because I don't like the music. I also have churches I don't like attending because I don't like their music in the area. In our area lots of different options, no reason to go to what I don't like. Luckily this Mass also happens to be the most easy for us since it has the Children's Liturgy and the preschool RE.

I think the music at our parish is brilliantly inspired and skillfully executed. Did I mention it's all me? LOL! J/K

I am getting so burnt out choosing music and now that we are back to Ordinary Time it is really difficult to find music that fits but I also consider suitable. The hymnals we use are, unfortunately, filled with songs that I feel aren't appropriate for Mass or are even in some cases borderline heretical.

We have about 7 people that make up the 2 choirs in our parish. We're a pretty small parish. 1 man plays the guitar and sings well and I enjoy it more when he is singing. The rest sound awful. DH and I have often wondered if they only practice in the 15 minutes before mass because they are never on time, mumble through parts of the songs and are just generally off-key. But, they try. lol One lady from the choir has told me that, "if God gave you a bad voice, give it back to him."

Our priest is the reason we attend our parish, definitely not the music! And, we do avoid other parishes or mass times because of the music. I'm not a fan of the Life Teen masses because I think the music is just too much to take.

I grew up Pentecostal and I miss the music from it, although, that's pretty much it. When we sing a Hymnn I remember, I want to tell the choir to pick up the pace!

Nothing is worse than bad timing! Off-key, I can ignore that. It doesn't throw me off, I just focus my ear on the guitar or piano instead of the voices and sing extra loud in the right key. But when they take an upbeat song and drag.it.out.in.slow.motion.I.want.to.run.screaming .into.busy.traffic! Same when they take a slower, reflective song and burn through it at super speed! When the kids are older, getting back into music ministry is on my bucket list. Did I mention I love to sing???

I'm with you on the song being too slow. When we used to be able to attend Mass at a Dominican Monastery, this would drive me bonkers. I love to hear hymns in the Latin chant and their voices were beautiful and right on key BUT they would sing the opening hymn and the gloria so slow it seriously took 20 minutes to get to the first reading. My only critique of our time spent at Masses there.

What is the musical style at the Mass you usually attend?
Sort like an artsie folk band. One of the deacons plays guitar, there is a standing bass, and a girl who goes back and forth between the organ, the keyboard, and an accordion. It's very simple, not showy or over-the-top, and sort of contemplative.
Would you go or have you ever gone to a different Mass/parish because of the music?
Sort of. Not so much on how it sounds, but that it is theologically appropriate. There is nothing worse than being at church and hearing a song and thinking, "No, that's completely wrong!!!" I also appreciate when the music reflects the season.
I love visiting churches with the super oldschool mass where most of it is sung/chanted. I go visit a few churches just to be around that. I love it!
