You know the series of "I'm a Mormon" videos, where they do a little profile on an interesting person or a couple, etc.?

Well, I love the series, and I thought that my uncle would be perfect for it. So, through the Mormon.org feedback system I sent them a message telling them about him. He lives in Seattle and he founded an organization called Mamma's Hands. He takes volunteers out once or twice a week with lots of food, donated by sponsors, to give to homeless people in Seattle. They also take a bunch of cell phones with them, and they help people call their families to either just let them know that they're alive and okay, or to help make plans to get back home. So far, he has helped more than 800 homeless people in Seattle get back home to their families. He helps with bus fare and everything, if the person or the family can contribute some to it (that's probably just a safeguard to make sure he's not just giving them a bus ticket to nowhere, you know?).

He also has two of his "House of Hope," and he's in the process of buying or building a third. Each one is a big house where he houses women and children who need help escaping abusive situations, or just need help getting a new start for whatever reason. The moms and the kids have responsibilities around the house and they are the ones to keep the household running, doing the grocery shopping and the cooking, cleaning, etc. There is no tolerance for drugs or alcohol, and these homes are in a secluded, safe place. He also helps them find jobs and their own homes when they are ready. And his family is all very involved in it, too. I saw a picture the other day of his daughter-in-law teaching piano lessons at one of the houses.

Anyway, he is also a very, very talented musician and songwriter, so I told them about that, too.

So anyway, at first I just got an auto-reply saying that they couldn't respond personally to everyone but that my e-mail would be read. Then a few days later I got a real reply asking for his contact information (this was only about a week ago).

And THEN, on Friday I got a call from my uncle telling me that they had already sent someone to Seattle to talk to him, and he had just finished up his initial interview. The guy they sent told him that they get thousands of requests, and that they have decided to narrow it down to 900 people that they will look into, but they are only going to make 30-40 of the videos, but that they would be sending a production crew to Seattle to produce it! There's still no guarantee that it will actually make the final cut, but they are definitely going to produce it. And I bet they can't make that guarantee before they produce it, just in case things don't go as well as they'd like or they don't get as good an interview as they'd like, etc. I'd be really surprised, at this point, if it didn't pan out.

Anyway, my uncle started crying on the phone because the guy also told him that the letter from his niece (me) was so sweet that they had to look into it. That made me happy. He really is an exceptional person, and I am really excited that he might be featured!!

The crew is in Seattle filming for this right now! I am so excited. And apparently Bonneville (the big media company owned by the church) is planning to film something else featuring him, too!!
