My family is kind of grouping together to read the Book of Mormon. I have to say, I am not very good at it...at all. I always think of family scripture study and needing to get DH and I on the same page. That is hard. We have been working for years to just remember to say our family prayers. It took me a long time to think about joining my family in reading the BOM consistently. I am dyslexic. It is extremely hard for me to read. I abhor reading for the most part. While DH and I were returning from the Military homecoming we went to over the weekend, we got into a pretty spiritual discussion. We decided to give ourselves a goal. DH would read as much of the BOM as he could on the train rides to work. Since I am a SAHM, I should set aside 15-30 minutes each day to read the BOM, but that I would be listening to it being read to me.
I knew that if I was going to do this right, I would need to get a BOM reading chart where you can cross off all of the chapters that you have read. So I found one today. It not only had all of the chapters, but it also included the title page, the testimonies, and the brief explanation. After I had done the chapters, I decided to go through all of the first part. It was really hard because I couldn't find audio of it and I actually had to READ it. But, I did and it was amazing! The brief explanation stood out to me today.
I am excited to start this process. I am glad DH and I are encouraging each other in our reading. I listened to all of King Benjamin's address today (Mosiah 1-5) and know that I need to continue on reading. I just had to share.
I have recently started to declutter my life as to make room for the really important things. We got rid of the TV in our bedroom, shut off cable and I have made the goal of no more than 30 minutes on the computer a day. After making those changes, we have found it is easy to add in scripture reading. We have been reading every evening as a family for the last month. What I really love is when I can ask my boys questions about what we've read, and they can answer them. I know they are paying attention and it makes us want to read more.
