There's a new member in my ward, a single mom with a 15 or 16 month old daughter. Anyway, it seems neither of them have dresses, as they're always dressed in pants at church. Which I totally understand, because dresses can be expensive! (and she's always dressed nicely, so it's obviously the best she's got).

Anyway, I have some extra fabric and I was going to make Allison a dress out of it, but today in Sacrament meeting I looked over at them and it popped into my head that I should make a dress for Muriel's daughter instead, since Allison has about a billion.

So I talked to the Relief Society president about whether it would be something that would embarrass her or not, and she told me to talk to the missionaries, since they're the ones who really know her. But, you know, they're boys and not really that sensitive to that sort of thing, so they didn't know.

So now I'm not sure whether I should proceed. The LAST thing in the world I'd want to do is embarrass her! What do you ladies think?

Maybe get to know her and then you can feel it out yourself? Having a friend would probably be even better than just having a dress. She may wear pants for reasons other than not having a dress. There are some women who choose to wear pants for various reasons.

That's another thing I was wondering. She and I have talked in church. Her little girl is obsessed with Allison. But...not much outside.

Maybe you could make it and say you just had extra fabric and thought it would be cute on her daughter...

Someone gave me some socks (that her son had grown out of) in my ward. I am not sure if they thought I was poor or if they were just being nice, but I didn't take offence...

I think as long as you don't make it sound like you are correcting her wrong doing, I think you'll be fine. Babies don't HAVE to be dressed up for church, many of the babies in my ward don't...

Tough call honestly. Do you think anybody has told her she should wear a skirt or dress? The children I don't particually worry about...not at one yrs old, but mom not wearing one is odd for an LDS ward. I was told by my MIL that I was supposed to wear a dress or skirt, but if she had never told me I would have gone in dress pants...I wouldn't have known otherwise.

I think you should probably get to know her more and then hint about dresses...she how she responds. You can choose how to proceed once you have a better understanding of who she is.

I doubt she would be embarrassed if you made her little girl a dress, she would probably just think you were nice. If I were you I just wouldn't mention anything about the dress being for church.
