The past couple of days have been crazy. On March 15th, I went to my regularly scheduled OB visit. My blood pressure was higher than they would like. It was something in the 120s-130s over 92. My normal blood pressure is 120s over 70s-80s. The past few appointments my blood pressure has been climbing. My doctor's associate was concerned because I had some swelling in my hands and feet, spilled protein and glucose in my urine, and had higher blood pressure. She was worried that it could be the start of preeclampsia.

Because of the appointment she made the decision to send me over to L&D for observation of my blood pressure. Turns out once I got to the hospital my BP normalized (anywhere from 120/80 to 120s/70s). My blood work also came back great. The unexpected surprise was that I was having Braxton Hicks contractions every 2-4 minutes. I knew I had some contractions because I could feel those but I wasn't feeling all the contractions. During the monitoring I had a couple of mild pain contractions (didn't hurt too much but they weren't nothing either). When I was at my appointment and at the hospital they checked me and I was only 1 cm dilated, 50% effaced, and my cervix was still pointed towards my back. They decided that after some monitoring that they would release me. I was still having contractions but they weren't every 2-4 minutes and they made me come home and drink a TON of 32oz jugs of water. I was also supposed to start a 24 hour urine collection the next more.

Well, things didn't turn out as I had expected. Around 12:45m, I had a really BIG contraction. It was very painful. It started in my back and wrapped around to my belly along with having tons of pressure and period like cramps. Then 3 minutes later I had another contraction. I continued to lay there in bed for about 45 minutes. I did try to change positions to see if they would stop. Well they didn't. Only got more intense. So I woke up my husband. He was super groggy because he had decided to take a sleeping pill that night. Yes you read that right. The night I went into labor my husband took a freaking sleeping pill. Sounds like the scene from Father of the Bride Part 2 with Steve Martin.

Well once I got my husband awake he asked if I was sure and wanted to know if we should go ahead and go back to the hospital. After another contraction I agreed (I'm the stubborn type and kind of wanted to wait and see what happens). Before getting dressed I decided that I needed to go pee. Normally I pee in the dark, but since I was about to get dressed I went ahead I actually had the light on. Well guess what. I lost my mucas plug. Was definitely the plug. I know what it looked like even though I never lost mine with my son. So it was DEFINITELY the time to go to the hospital.

When I arrived at the hospital, I was 4-5cm dilated. Yikes! I had only been having bad contractions for 1 Ĺ hours and I was already that dilated. I ordered my epidural immediately. It wasnít until 3:45 when they gave me the epidural. I had a bad reaction to the epidural at first. My blood pressure dropped to 90/40. So it was dangerously low (that is a common side effect). They gave me some epi shots (the ones used for allergies) to help raise my blood pressure. I ended up shaking really bad and vomiting from the low blood pressure. But after 20 my blood pressure was normal and the epidural was working.

After another few hours (around 830) they decided to go ahead and break my bag of water. I was at 8cm then. The epidural definitely slowed down my progress but I was fine about that. Unfortunately a little later (when I was 9 1/2cm) the stupid epidural decided to wear off. I started feeling ALL contractions and I could definitely feel my little girls head in my hoohah! It was extremely painful. I started to shake again from the pain. The dr tried to fix the epidural but they didnít know what was wrong. I think the little catheter the put in your back probably wiggled out of the right space. So I had to push feeling everything. More power to those women who can do the whole labor without meds! About 1015 I was ready to push. I was in extreme pain but I tried to breathe thru the contractions. I felt the burning ring of fire. And what they say is true. It feels better to push than to not push. It helps relieve some of the pressure. After 6 contractions of pushing, my little girl Madeline Michelle was born at 10:51am on 3/16/2010. They put her on my chest and cleaned her off there. She is so cute! My little sweetheart!

They let her stay in our L&D room for 2 hours because they realized that she was grunting constantly. They thought it would go away but it didnít. Around 5:30pm they transferred her from the nursery (where they had taken her at about 1pm) to the NICU for more observation. I found out today 3/17/10 that she has stopped grunting and may be transferred back to my room this afternoon. Yeah!!!!!!!! Iím going to post pictures in another post because this post is already really long.

So that is my story. Thanks for reading!
Thanks claire1979 for the beautiful siggy!

Note to self... don't let DH take sleeping pill!! He often does when he's home since he works 3rd shift!

What a great story though. She must have heard about all the tests and decided to let you skip them!

Your story wasn't too long at all! Sounds pretty exciting. I know my son had some breathing issues when he was born and we still got to go home the next day. Good luck! She's so pretty!

Wow! Thats crazy! I wonder if the docs did anything at the office to bring on the labor. Glad that both you and her are healthy.
