(Warning, it got a bit scary a few times and I mention it in the birth story)
Alivia Irelyn was born on April 22, 2010 at 2:46 pm! She weighed 4lbs 11 oz and was 18 inches long with a full head of brown hair and brown eyes! ....and here is her birth story
I went in for my regular 39 week appointment on April 21st. My blood pressure was high yet again, so they sent me off to the hospital to run all the tests. When I got in they started running tests, and they did an NST, she was doing good on the NST, but a few of my levels came back a bit elevated, so they said it would probably be best to induce. They put in Cervidil at about 1:30pm on the 21st and kept me at the hospital from then on. They said it may or may not cause cramps/contractions but the purpose was to thin my cervix. I was not thinned at all and about 1cm. I started cramping pretty much right away, but it felt more like period pains. The next couple of hours I just walked around and went and got something to eat. At about 7-ish pm or so I started getting contractions a bit more, and on one of the NST's Alivia's heart rated dropped so they wanted to keep me on for a while. I found it hard to stay hooked up for 4 hours while getting more and more uncomfortable because I couldn't move. Finally at about 11 pm they admitted me to a Labor and Delivery room. We got settled and the dr. came in and suggested I take some moriphine to get some sleep. I was shaking from adrenilin and there was some pain with the contractions. I was scared to take it because I didn't want to feel out of it or high or anything. But after talking to my dr., my DH and the nurses I decided to take a partial dose so I could get some rest. At about 1am I got that shot and it really helped me to sleep for a good 4-5 hours. Once I woke up the contractions were not feeling as strong. At about 9 am they checked me again and I was 2-3cm and I think she stirred things up because after the exam I went walking and the contractons started coming every 3-5 mins, but they were bareable. Nothing I couldn't really talk through etc. At about 12:45 I got one that brought tears to my eyes, and I was starting to feel some pressure, so I called the nurse. She came in and checked me at about 1pm and said I was 4cm and my water was bulging. She called the dr. to come assess me and decide what to do next. The dr. came and decided to take out the cervidil, with the next contraction at about 1:15pm my water broke on it's own. After my water broke, the contractions got sooooo painful and much harder. By 1:30 p.m. I asked for an eppi. They hoooked me up to the monitor and put an internal monitor on Alivia. They noticed everytime I had a contraction her heart rate dropped and they were keeping a close eye. She wasn't happy after my water broke at all. It seemed to take forever to get my eppi. The contractions were getting extreemly hard. They started calling in doctors and specialists and were prepping me for a c-section. About 10 or so nurses/doctors/speicalists filled the room and they had me moving all the over the place trying to get the baby happy in there, and I just kept asking for my eppi. Besides the contractions I was getting shooting pains down the outside of both my legs that were so painful. The doctor for my eppi got there but it took her about 30-40 mins to get my eppi in, and that was when I had some of the most strongest contractions. By 2:15 -2:20 pm I finally had my eppidural and it JUST started to work and they checked me and I was about 8-9cm. The eppi took the edge off the pain but the pressure was still CRAZY. They said Alivia was facing up and side ways so they tried to turn her over. They said the last cm was taking longer than they wanted and they wanted her out NOW, and because of her position I still had that last cm. They had me push to try to clear the way. Finally it worked. The whole time during this baby was not doing well at all and every so often they would freak out and move me around and call people in etc. Everytime I got a contraction her heart rate would drop wayyyyy down..DH said at times he saw it down to 46 or lower, and they were preping me for a c-section. Once I was 10 cm they they let me push for 2-3 contractions and then they were getting panicked again, so they hooked up the vacuum and with the next contraction she was born, one push for her head, and one for her body. So my water broke at about 1:15pm and she was born at 2:46pm, so from about 4cm to being born in 1.5 hours, that was sooooo quick compared to my DD #1. It was also a much harder, more painful, scary labor, but she is here and safe and I am happy!
They were all suprised at how small she was right away, because most of my ultrasounds estimated her to be about 6lbs. They took her straight to the NICU. I only had a little tear. The OB said it was considered a second degree tear because it went into some muscle, but it was only 1-2 stitches. They said she had a few problems breathing but fixed that quickly on her own and didn't have to be put on oxygen. After they assessed her they said she seems to be about 34-35 weeks gestation (from looking at her size, her genitals, and the way she acts) But I know my dates, so I really think because of my high blood pressure she stopped developing as much in the end. They did say her size was due to my high blood pressure. I finally got to see her around 7pm and I got to hold and feed her at 9pm. Actually my 1st DD was actually the first person (besides dr.'s and nurses) to hold her and she is VERY proud of this. We took of pictures of the first time. She had to be fed with a tube twice after that because her sugars were low, but has been latching on and taking formula from a bottle like a champ the past day or so I am pumping to get my milk in and hopefully I can breast feed full time once she starts gaining weight good.
Hope I didn't miss anything in my story! Thanks for reading. We are so very in love with our new little addition!
