On the night of the 11th, I woke up several times through the night with a contraction..but kept going back to sleep and figured they'd go away by morning. I woke up at 6:30, got up, got my morning Diet Dr Pepper and headed off to the computer to wake up a little. I noticed I was still having contractions that were a little painful and about 6 or 7 minutes apart. I waited until about 7:15 and went to take a shower to make sure they didn't just go away and they were still there afterwards. So I called the Dr's office and he said if I thought I should come in to head that way since my first labor was really fast. After that I made DH's coffee (he doesn't function without a couple of cups of coffee in his system) and woke him up at 8 to tell him to guzzle some coffee because we were leaving as soon as I got DS dressed and ready to go. By that time with all the moving around the contractions were getting pretty painful and I went in the bedroom to tell DH to hurry up and he was getting in the shower *sigh*. Thankfully he did manage to make it a quick shower and we finally got out of the house about 9 or so. We dropped off DS at my Aunt's house and off to the hospital we went.
We got there and got put into a triage room around 10:15 I believe...the nurse hooked me up to the monitors and left and they weren't picking up a single contraction. She said she wanted to see the contraction pattern before she checked me to see how dilated I was or something along those lines. So after she adjusted them and got them to pick up some really wimpy looking contractions she came back in and said they were 5 mins apart and she'd check to see if I needed to stay and be admitted or not. 5cm and almost completely effaced...yay..baby time! I asked if I could have one of the rooms with a jacuzzi tub and she went to check if they were open and about 15 mins later she came to get me and move me into one of them (I got super lucky..they only have two rooms with tubs).
As soon as I get in the new room, my labor nurse comes in to check me (different nurse from triage) and I was already 7cm just in the 20 mins it had taken to move rooms. The nurse said I probably wouldn't be able to get in the tub since it was going so fast but we'd ask the Dr anyway. So he came in after a couple of minutes and said I could use the tub...just make sure to get out right away if I felt like I had to push..but I couldn't turn on the jacuzzi part because I might not be able to tell if my water broke and they wanted me out if it broke. So the nurse got the tub set up...said she needed to check me again before I got in and that I was 8cm. So after only about 20 mins in the tub I started getting a little bit of a pushy type feeling on the couple of really strong contractions I had while I was in there. So I got out thinking it would be almost time and got back in bed and the nurse checked and I was still at 8. She asked if I wanted my water broken and I told her no, I'd just wait a little longer and asked if I could walk around but she told me to stay in bed in case my water broke because she didn't want me delivering in the hallway if it did.
So about 1 she checks me again...still at 8 but she said since it slowed down I could get up and walk around if I wanted...come back in 30 mins to get hooked back up to the monitors. So I got up and made it into the bathroom where they had a handicap bar on the wall...and it felt much better to just lean my head on the wall and hang onto that bar during a contraction..so I just stayed in there..never made it out of the room. Right before the nurse came back to tell me I needed to get checked again and hooked back up I started feeling like I had to push again...so she checked and said I was still right about 8...maybe a little closer to 9..but that if I let the Dr break my water the baby would probably be out in 5 mins. So I told her to tell him to do it.
By the time the Dr showed up a few minutes after 2 I was really feeling like I needed to push so he checked again quick before he broke my water and said I was 9 with a little bit of a lip left but he was pretty sure he could push it out of the way and I could push through it. So we did one push before he broke my water since a contraction hit. Then he broke my water and said if I pushed hard she could be out in 3 contractions. So the next one came and I got her head past the lip and almost out and the next contraction she was born. She was born at 2:15 pm and weighed 7lbs 1.8oz. They didn't tell us a length and neither DH or I thought to ask at the time.
It took forever to get stitched up afterwards (two small tears in the front that didn't need stitches and one small tear where my episiotomy was with DS that needed a few). The Dr told the nurses to bring him the local anesthetic to do the stitches and they brought him a 5ml bottle and he said he needed at least a 50ml bottle for patients without an epidural and the nurses couldn't find one. Then the Dr chewed them out for not having it in the room beforehand. I just wanted him to be done down there..but it was kind of funny.
Overall I'm really happy with the whole experience. Baby is perfect...I got to go into labor on my own and not be induced and I managed to it without drugs when I really wasn't sure if I could or not.
