There were a few people that were wondering what the cost savings would be for cloth diapers.

Here is a chart with a breakdown of the costs of each cloth and disposables. Keep in mind though that there are many different types of cloth diapers that are not all the same price. This chart shows the prices for prefolds or BumGenius One Size diapers. I have an entire stash of BumGenius One Size diapers, and they fit Haydon from about 2 months until now, and he's two years old!

Here is the link with the breakdown of prices.
Cost Savings - Cloth Diapers vs. Disposables

Here is a picture of Haydon at just 3 months old in a Rumparooz One Size diaper... tried to find a picture of him in a BumGenius OS, but for some reason I can't find one. The Rumparooz are pretty similar though.

OK, now I'm getting excited to use my cloth diapers again! I just love fluffy colorful baby butts!

hehehe. I got all my cloth diapers for $15. I'm gonna save tons of money on my next baby if I can do cloth.
Sorry, I had to gloat. I always tell my husband that I don't just stay at home for free, I'm his financial advisor and resident saver of money.

Although the costs are correct, it kind of adds up to be more because once you get addicted, you start buying the expensive dipes LOL. Also, my elec bill went way up because of the dryer running like every or every other day on top of my regular laundry.

I've not been using cloth for forever now and really miss it. Cannot wait to get back to it with this new babe. I've been stocking up already, and really, you can do it for super cheap. I use Little-Lions seconds PF's and Thirsties covers. I watch FSOT and picked up 5 covers for 30 shipped, and was actually just gifted 2 dzn infant PF's too, so so far for infant stage I'm only out $30 and I'm only planning to get a couple of Snappi's, and another dzn PF's. i'll probably splurge and get one super cute tiny newborn dipe to be the 1st dipe, but that's it for the 1st 6 mos or so.

My cost was a little more going into it because I used GM's. But then decided I liked PFs alot better...sold all the GM's and used that money to buy all prefolds. I'm indecisive. But, It was still less than using disposables. There were no changes in my electric or water bill. Probably because I do 5 loads of laundry a day and 1 load of diapers every other day didn't add much to the mix. Plus, I hang my diapers to dry. I don't put them in the dryer unless it's an emergency and I need one NOW.

and...I never had a blow out when using cloth with a newborn..NOT.ONE.BLOWOUT. Which meant, less laundry to wash! So it saved all around!

I love cloth diapering. I use a varied selection of diapers, there are few things as cute as a baby in fluff wearing babylegs

I have pulled out my stash twice to remember them in it and get excited for the new baby wearing them (although if we have a boy, i get to go shopping again as i doubt the baby will love a pink lacy bum lol )

I just showed this to my husband and he was so excited lol!!!

Just the fact that you can save them for your next child makes them worth it IMO... Yeah you buy some new, but once you have a nice stash you're good to go, I would think....

I need to start working on mine

Same thing I was thinking!! I can be more cost efficient if you stick to the basics, the cute prints get highly addicitive...so I am not going to be actually saving any money but DH does not know this lol

It is cost effective if you don't get caught up in buying new diapers. When my ds was 4 months old I invested in a stash of bum genius, I didn't buy any new ones after that. We saved money since I didn't buy any more. For this baby, I had to buy newborn cloth diapers, but I got all that over thanksgiving weekend through a few black friday sales. We are set from birth through potty training.

Since it'll be warm when we have our babies and for a little while afterwards, that should save even more for those who can line dry instead of running the dryer. I love clothes that get to dry in the sun

I'm becoming more and more sold on cloth diapers. I think I might start buying some now. It shouldn't be too bad if the cost is spread out over the months

I never tried cloth diapers, but after reading all these posts, I am really going to start reading up on them and the various brands.
For starters: how many covers should i get and how many inserts will be fine. I hate doing laundry and would like to not have to do it every day to be caught up.
Please advise on where to start, brands ideas, etc. thanks. where do you usually buy them?

You girls are totally getting me into CDing again. AHHH!!! I have a bunch of prefolds in my attic, but I still have to add to my stash since a couple prefolds turned into my cleaning rags. Bah!!! But newborns in cloth is the cutest thing I've ever seen. Besides, that new little booty deserves to sit in nice soft cloth!

Here is a good website that explains the different types of cloth diapers you can use.

Cloth Diaper Types - Fitteds, AIOs, Pockets, and Prefold Cloth Diapers

My entire stash is made up of mostley Bum Genius One Size Pockets. Most all pocket diapers come with the insert. In fact Bum Genius gives you one full size insert, AND a doubler insert with each cloth diaper... I found the doubler inserts work great for newborns or younger infants because they aren't as bulky as the full size insert.

I also have a few prefolds that I bought to line my gDiapers, but I think I'm going to buy about 20 more prefolds and 10 covers in newborn. Prefolds are like a dollar a piece, and they are really not that difficult to learn at all.

I'd like some advice for starting out too! I've heard of a bunch of different brands and different types and I know everyone has different opinions about everything but I'm not really sure where to start. Like what's the difference between a prefold and a pocket diaper? Should we get some of each to test them out? About how many diapers would be considered a good amount to start with? I've heard people say to not buy too many newborn sized (disposable) diapers, but does that go for cloth too?

^ Haha, thanks Terra for answering my questions seconds before I posted them

P.s. I have around 28 pocket diapers and I would do diaper laundry every couple days. I'de rather do it every other day though just cause I don't like the idea of a soiled diaper sitting in diaper pail for too long.

Also, for my diaper pail I just bought a trash can with a cover and two pail liners. Works great, and never had any "stench" in my house.

Some diaper stores will let you try some cloth diapers before you actually purchase them. I never did that, but I did so much research before I bought them that I was pretty sure what I wanted.

bumGenius - Cotton Babies Cloth Diaper Store

Cotton Babies is a good store, when I got my tax refund back I purchased a 6 pack of BG OS pocket diapers, and I tried them for a day, and then after a day I decided I wanted an entire stash and bought a bunch more.

I am going to try to pick up CDing again with my tot, maybe it will help with potty training!!

Prefolds are super easy to learn, seriously don't be intimidated. I even graduated to using pins (yes, I got that addicted lol).

Terra, what diapers are best for newborns? I didn't CD Brendan til he was a few months old, and he was a big boy so his Medium BG lasted him til i quit CDing at like 9 or 10 months old. Also, what size would i get? OS, or get small? Newborn stashing is scary because I know how quick they grow =/

I'm not sure either, as I didn't have enough money for my stash until Haydon was like 3 months. The BG OS fit him perfectly on the small setting at 3 months, and I bet he could've worn them at 2 months too... might've been a little bulky, but it would've worked is my guess.

I've heard that Fuzzibuns are great for newborns, but don't quote me on that, lol. I don't think I'll buy anything "fancy" for a newborn though... just prefolds and a couple cute covers since I know newborns grow so fast!

I've also thought about putting Haydon back in his cloth diapers to help him potty train, and I actually did a few days ago because we ran out of sposies and I was too lazy to get some... HA, then of course he pooped a gigantic load of pasty crap, it made me gag with my morning sickness lol. If I'm going to start him back on cloth I NEED to buy the disposable liners to lift his poo off. He has the grossest poop ever, lol, I babsysat a friends daughter and she pooped hard little nuggets, I was thinking "wow if Haydon pooped like that I would DEFINATLEY still be cloth diapering him!" hahaha
