I have been lurking here for awhile because I am so nervous to actually say that I am pregnant. I am 39 and have tried for 11.5 years to get pregnant. We figured that we were not going to have children after several infertility treatments early on but they never found anything wrong with us. Well then we got Christmas miracle and are expecting our first child 8/23/11. My LMP was 11/16. Went to the Dr. 12/21 and HCG was 5,499 and Progesterone was 21.9 so that would have been exactly 5W. I had very slight brown discharge a few days ago so I went in for an ultrasound and blood work yesterday. We saw the baby and the yolk sak and even the heart beat. I had a pelvic exam and they said everything was great! Well I get the call today that my HCG is great at 89,000 but my progesterone dropped to 18. I am exactly 7 weeks today. I have to go in tomorrow to be retested. Has anyone else had this problem? Does this mean I will most likely miscarry? Sorry for the lengthy post!!!

1/6 UPDATE: I got my results back today and my HCG went up to 101,000 but proegesterone went down to 15. They said it is still fine though because it is above 10. I asked if I should go on Prometrium and the nurse told me that the doctors reviewed my numbers and do not want to put me on progesterone at this time because my HCG looks so good. I'm trying to trust in them but it's hard. My first full OB appointment will be Monday 1/10 so I will get another ultrasound. I'm going to try and relax until then and hope everything is OK.

Hi Cindi, welcome to Aug DDC! Im Tobi (39) and although I dont have any experience with progesterone (P4) dropping I do know that throughout the day we have progesterone surges, so even if you test on the same day it can be up and down, all over the place. There are certain 'safe' levels though. I dont know what the numbers are for sure, but if you are being followed by your Dr, and he finds your P4 low he will give you progesterone to boost up your levels to a safe #. Good luck and keep us posted on what your Dr decides to do!

Not sure about the progesterone, but those HcG levels sound good. I really, really hope this is the one for you. Huge congrats on your BFP!

My progesterone was 17 at 4 weeks and the doctor put me on supplements. There is some evidence that low progesterone is a cause of miscarriage, but others studies have shown no links. If yours continues to drop, it's likely that your doctor will put you on supplements (I take prometrium) and keep you on them till 10-12 weeks.

Keep us posted! Your HCG levels look great!

Don't worry. Anything over 5 is good for a pregnant progesterone level. Mine was 25.3 and dropped to 22 something in 4 days. The doctor said this number goes back and fourth and just needs to stay above 5. They look at your HCG levels more, which yours are great.

It was explained to me that progesterone maintained uterine lining. If you didn't have enough, the lining would be really thin. If it was normal at your u/s then I would think you had nothing to worry about. My SIL had really low progesterone, and they could tell just by looking at the lining. She went on supplements for the first 12 weeks. HTH, that's all I know about it.

Your progesterone level can vary from day to day and throughout the day and that is normal. The first time I had mine checked it was around 30 and a few days later it was around 25. (I think) My RE said he wanted to see it above 15 and it was fine. I am on progesterone suppositories due to previous loss.

You are probably fine but if you are worried you could repeat your levels or ask for progesterone supplements.

Your Dr told you that anything above a 5 was good? I've been dealing with progesterone problems for 8 years and I have never heard of that.

From my experience, my DR likes to see a level above 12 but she will put you on supplements unless you are around 20. My level with my DD was 8 at 18DPO and I was put on 200mg of Prometrium and I took it until 15 weeks. This pregnancy and last pregnancy I just called the DR and asked her to fax me in a script so I have no idea what they are/were. I have a progesterone disfunction which is why I couldn't get pregnant for so long.

Cindi - I don't think that your progesterone lowering means anything. Sometimes it just happens. BUT if it gets in to the "danger zone" of lower than 12....demand some Prometrium. Good Luck hun. KUP!

I am on prometrium like a few other ladies here. I wouldn't hesitate to ask for it, as a little extra can't hurt, but low preogesterone is what was blamed for my recurrent miscarriages, and I have had a successful pregnancy on prometrium, and this looks to hopefully be my second! Good luck, and I can't wait to get to know you better!

Mine has been dropping. At 13 dpo it was 20.5, then 17 dpo it was 18.2, then 24 dpo it was 16.67. It's not dropping fast, but it is dropping however. The dr's aren't concerned about it yet, but are keeping a close eye on it. I'm getting it rechecked tomorrow and I'm thinking if it drops more they'll put me on something. If you're concerned about it, talk to your dr about it, ask them what their min level is before they put you on medicine for it. GL!

Yeah, she didn't go into detail about putting me on something if it drops low, but said anything over 5 is a sign of pregnancy and said it was good. They said if it gets too low it will probably end in a miscarriage, but that mine was really good and not to worry.

This is totally shocking to me as well. When I went through my investigative cycle with my RE (Reproductive Endocrinologist) in a normal non pregnant cycle they want your progesterone level at 7dpo to be at least 10 or they consider it a deficiency. And a pregnancy cycle, at 4 weeks should be around 20. Keeping in mind the rises and dips throughout the day.
This is a really fantastic site for levels, that I refer to frequently.

Wow, thanks so much for all of the support and information!!! I'm so glad that I signed up here, you ladies are great! I went on my lunch break today for the test and will find out the results tomorrow. I feel like I am always waiting for something! My concern is that some of the sites are saying that progesterone support will not help after a positive pregnancy test. Well I'm going to try and not stress about it tonight. Thanks again!!!

That's great about your hcg! You're dr sounds like mine. He refuses to put me on progesterone. He said at this point it can't hurt or help so there's no point. He said if progesterone was a problem I would've already lost the baby a few days after testing positive. And soon the placenta will take over so there's no point anyway. He said so many dr's are prescribing it for no reason nowadays. Idk, I'm not worried about it anymore really since my dr said everything is fine. I think if your dr is worried there should be a cause of concern, but since they're not everything should be fine. GL!
