So I saw an ad on JM earlier this morning and i clicked on it, said cloth and disposable in one. Well gdiapers have cloth diapers and you could also get disposable liners to go inside. Which seems pretty easy, they break down fast which I like and they are so stinking cute.
Thoughts on this, is there a better diaper out there that offers this, will this cost a lot more then disposables in the long run, and what about a mom on the go?
We actually started a thread about moms that are new to cloth diapering and we have a mom who likes them. I have never used them though (I'm stuck on Sunbaby diapers )
Here is the thread if you want to check it out along with other diapers we are using.
I think that for the diapers to actually decompose the way they describe, they would have to be put in a compost pile. So if you don't have a proper compost pile the benefits and your attempts to be more earth friendly will be wasted. A decomposable item in a dumpster will not decompose the way it would in a compost pile b/c it will be smashed up and pressed up against trash, instead of being in a place with a lot of air flow/bacteria/bugs/etc (dumpsters are pretty much toxic waste lands lol). So unless you have a compost pile that you are willing to fill with diapers, or know of one you can use... Flushing or throwing away the refills will have little environmental benefits. (Flushed stuff will be collected and taken to dumpsters, remember people flush plenty of trash down toilets and all this is collected as part of the purification process, not dumped into the ocean).
HOWEVER, if you are just looking for cute cloth that has the benefits of disposables, then maybe this works haha...
I actually have some gPants a friend gave me, and thankfully they fit my prefolds perfectly, so hopefully I will be able to use them for a bit! We will see, I'm a tad skeptical haha... Their design is... well different!!
A looooot of people hate g-diapers. I think I know of maybe a handful that still use them.
When I first got onto the idea of cloth I looked at them but then decided if I'm going to do cloth, g-diapers didn't seem the way to go.
Honestly, after spending a weekend with a friends cousins friend (i don't even remember now) who used them, full out cloth is just as easy, and cheaper.
If you're interested I'd highly suggest checking out the cloth diapering board. So many helpful ladies there to answer any question you may have (even if it's just deciding if it's for you or not!).
I looked into the gdiaper too. HATED them. The liners bunched and I the kids peed out of them all the time. I finally gave up. I do, though, use the covers with prefolds. They work great that way!

I LOVE gDiapers! We've been cloth diapering DS for 5 months (he's 14 months old now) and we have used 15 different kinds of diapers since we started trying to find the right match for us, and gDiapers have been the hands down winner! I love that I can wash out the pant(only when dirty) and the liner (I wash them out every time) in the sink with soap and water, hang them up on the shower curtain rod, and a few hours later they are ready to use again. That really cuts down on our laundry since all I have to wash is the cloth insert. We have used the disposable inserts as well, and they are super absorbent, but I prefer the cloth since we're doing this to save money. Lots of people will double up the cloth inserts (hemp side to hemp side) for naps and bedtime to double the absorbency.
After buying so many things (and wasting lots of money) trying to find what works for us, my biggest recommendation to you would be - if you think you want to try these, go to babies r us so you can check them out in person. And buy ONLY a 2 pack of the pants and 1-2 packages of the cloth inserts or 1 package of the disposable inserts. That way you can find out if you like them for minimal investment, and if they aren't a perfect fit for you you can always sell them on the gDiapers FB page and recoup at least half of that investment. Feel free to PM me if you have any more Q's. Good luck!

Oh yay! Glad to hear refolds work well with them haha
ColeyD, did you try out other covers with inserts/prefolds? Or just gDiapers? Just curious, because it sounds like what you like about the gDiapers would be true of almost any cover/prefold combo
I used gDiapers with Haydon and I really liked them! The inserts are as costley if not more costley than disposables, but I bought a dozen prefolds and just tri-folded them to fit into the gDiaper the same way the disposable inserts work.

Thank you everyone for all of this info, I REALLLY want to try cloth diapering but DF does not like the idea at all. I guess because he thinks they are just so hard to fool with, I've tried to explain but he still thinks its too hard. My mother also thinks I'm crazy and just getting myself into a big mess. I'm going to try to talk to DF about it because I want to do it so bad right now. I'll deff look into more cloth diapering styles.
My husband wasn't on board with it either at first. He was like "...you want to put poop in the washer?" That's always the first thing anyone thinks of! But it's like.. if baby has a blowout and gets poop on clothing/sheets/etc, what do you do with them? You wash them! So it's really no different. I finally convinced my hubby by telling him I'd do the diaper changing (but I'm pretty sure he's forgotten that by now... I don't know if that would work for you this close to having the baby, you'd probably have to follow through xD) and I just went ahead and got some diapers and showed him that they're not complicated at all.
Dh has been on board ever since I showed him how much money we'd save if you go the cheap route and use prefolds with covers, you will only spend a few hundred on diapers! That's what I decided to do there are a bunch of options out there you just have to find what you think will work best for you!
A lot of people give you comments on how much more work it will be, and it's gross and bla bla bla... But honestly, I don't think it will be that much more work, and if I WANT to do it, it shouldn't be anyone else's problem
As for it being gross... Yeah, whatever... Babies puke all over everything, drool all over everything, when they start eating baby food it gets everywhere, formula smells and gets everywhere... I mean what's baby poop going to really add?! Lol
Those will be more expensive than disposable in the long run. If you want to do cloth diapering, you may have a local cloth diapering service where they would give you all of the supplies that you start with and they wash the diapers for you. I looked into this and unfortunately in my area it's a little more expensive than buying disposable diapers, but maybe in your area it's not.
I told him all of the money we could save with it and he still doesn't think its a good idea. He is VERY tight with money so I thought he would be all for it but hes not. I'm still going to try to talk him into it. I don't wanna go behind his back and go and buy them because I know he would get mad or hurt that I did that, as silly as that sounds.
Lurker, Im from New Zealand and i part time cloth diaper my DD, i actually made my own CD and i use prefolds as a insert (fold them into a rectangle shape) and use a flushable thin liner so that when they poo u just pick up the liner and flush it and then soak/wash nappy and insert as normal. i dont have to scrape or wash poo from the nappy. do u guys get nappy liners in the states etc?
i am using disposable..but ive heard if you use the disposable liners you have to break them down yourself..I dont know how true it is..just something you might wanna look into..i dont know anything about cloth diapering..just thought id throw that out there!! good luck!
