Anyone doing this for their babe's first birthday?
We're having a BBQ/party thing for my babe's first birthday.
We were planning to quickly toss together some cupcakes or get a sheet cake at the grocery store however, just today the woman who made our wedding cake offered a discount on a beautiful fondant theme cake. So he now has a big 2 tier professional cake for his birthday.
A friend of mine commented that the top layer should be for the cake smash.
Ummmmmm... NO. Even though it was discounted, it wasn't free. I can't justify wasting money like that. Also the cake is for everyone to eat. Besides that, my babe doesn't really eat much solid food anyway, so I was not planning on giving him more than a few bites. Seeing him with food all over his face and clothes does not appeal to me.
So that's my reasons for not doing a cake smash, however I have no problem with others deciding to do one. We also didn't do that at our wedding either. Smashing food just isn't our cup of tea.
Just curious if any of you were planning to do a cake smash for your babe's first, and why or why not.
We have never done a smash cake. We just give them a piece of the cake we buy---usually a Costco cake and let them play/eat that. We don't care for grocery-store cakes because we find their frosting is generally too sugary and people usually just scrape it off and discard it anyways. Costco's cakes and buttercream frosting are soooo delicious! Their sheet cakes are also only $17+ tax and it is quite large and says it has 48 servings to a sheet of cake....great deal!
Around here, the small smash cake is free with the purchase of the large cake. It's fun and silly and makes for great pictures. So yes, we will be ordering one.
I am totally doing it! Like others have said, a small cake is free with the purchase of a larger sheet cake. It was so much fun to watch DS#1 digging in.
For the record...we did not smash cake into each other's faces at our wedding. Totally different situation. Letting a 1 year old explore cake for the first time is different than shoving cake in the face of your new husband.
We didn't do a smash cake, but that doesn't mean we didn't have cake all over everything. I had never heard of a smash cake until my brother told us about it while he was living in Mexico. He does one with all his kids.

No, we didn't buy a cake specifically for him to smash. We bought his cake at Target. We love their cakes because they're inexpensive, not too sweet, & yummy. If they had given me one free, I would have given him a portion of that depending on the size of it. I'm not going to sit there & let him waste & play in tons of food whether it was free or not.
We cut out a small square of his sheet cake & let him eat that. We undressed him to his diaper to minimize the mess.
Yep! They're super fun! AJ had a blast with his! And we strip them down first.
AJs cake we got for free but I am making Katelyns because I'm making several different kinds of cupcakes in lieu of a cake. I thought about just giving her her own cupcake but I don't think that will be as fun.
Also, I agree with Anne, I think smashing wedding cake in the face of your spouse is totally different than letting baby play in cake.

We didn't do a smash cake at our wedding. But, we will be doing one for baby's first birthday. I don't know if they are free or not, but I can not imagine that Walmart or the local grocery store would have them for too expensive. I also plan on stripping baby down to his diaper and bib for it
You know, I'd never really "heard" of it, but I did make both Erin and Patrick small cakes for them to have. I never have a lot of people over, so I never need to buy a big sheet cake. Erin's actually turned out rather bigger than I'd planned, but I LOVE her first birthday pictures because of it. We stripped her to her diaper and spread a blanket on the floor and just let her have at it.
I'll be doing it again for Allison.
((I didn't smash cake on Matt for our wedding either, and I told him if he did to me I'd kill him. Cake all over my face is not my idea of a good time))
Yep, Keelan will have his own smash cake. They are free here in the local store with the purchase of a birthday cake. The store here has whipped cream icing and not butter cream, so it's not super sweet.
I'm going to bake her cake for her birthday party. I'm going to make a bigger one for everyone that will be here and my friend is lending me a tiny cake pan to make Alex a smash cake.
I had considered just making cupcakes and giving Alex her own specially decorated cupcake to smash.
I haven't really decided yet.

Yes, we will do it. It's tradition. I will be making cupcakes and a smash cake to look like a beehive (we're doing a Pooh theme). Hers will be small. Most bakeries do it free with a cake order.
We bought one for Ryan and he wanted nothing to do with it, or the regular cake. Layla will just get a big ole piece of her cake!

Yep! I'm a cake decorator and have been decorating cakes for 5 years professionally. Smash cakes are very popular around here and since I'll be making his cake I'll also be making him his own smash cake. His cake will have basic buttercream icing, no fondant and I won't be using any heavy colours like I will for the cake everyone will be eating. I'm planing the cake that everyone is to eat to be done in primary colours, his will likely be in pastels.
I love when they see the cake and stick their hands into it. I'll strip him down to his diaper just like I did with the girls and let him have at it.
