Luke Richard arrived safely on Sunday, January 9th at 8:00 am via c-section, weighing 7 pounds 13 ounces and measuring 19 3/4 inches long.
On Friday (1/7), my hip/pelvic/PBS pain was unbearable. Even after visiting the chiropractor I could barely walk. Nate had to stay home from work because he couldn't leave me alone. And then my hip started to give out again where I couldn't put weight on my leg and I about lost it. I went back to bed and cried & cried. Nate was very worried & called my doctor. My doctor told me to head to the hospital (I hesitated at first because I didn't want to waste everyone's time only to be told to suck it up for the next 2 weeks) but she insisted. So we packed up the kids & went down.
My own beloved OB was on call and she hugged me and said she took this very seriously & we would do an amnio first thing in the morning. She said she has seen me through 2 other pregnancies and knows that I 'handle things well' - if I was having this hard of a time, she knew it was bad. And she agreed that I couldn't continue if I couldn't walk!
I had to get evaluated by a psychiatrist because technically I came in 'under emotional distress' but I 'passed' the next day without a problem - the psychiatrist said she felt that my 'break down' was clearly due to severe end of pregnancy pain and while I should be watched for post partum depression, I was fine and didn't need any meds.
I had the amnio first thing Saturday morning and despite having been told it would take 24 hours, the results came back within 5 hours that Luke's lungs were mature! My c-section was scheduled for Sunday morning at 7:30 am.
Everything went great with my c-section. Luke took a little time to perk up and his breathing was a little fast for the first 24 hours, but he has overall done very well. He did have to take a quick trip to the NICU for an eval Sunday afternoon because he continued to 'grunt' and 'sing' but his O2 levels were great and they never admitted him and sent us back to the maternity floor after just 1.5 hours. They told me that sometimes c-section babies just need a little more time to clear out their lungs and that's what happened with Luke. After 24 hours, his breathing cleared up completely and he's been perfectly fine ever since.
He is so tiny compared to my others - Nathan & Emily were both 9 lb 13 oz and Joshua of course was 10 lb 7.5 oz. So for me, to have a 7 lb 13 oz baby - well that is so small! All I have are 0-3 months clothes and they are so huge on Luke! One of my friends is bringing me some newborn clothes tomorrow though so we should be all set.
It's hard to believe that after all those months of stress & worry that my precious baby boy is finally here and he is just perfect! I am so in love & we are so blessed!
