I want to start this off by saying I knew that I absolutely would not "just know" that I was in labor like everyone around me kept saying.
On Thursday afternoon (4/7) my birth coach and close friend Katie was over just visiting and having lunch with me. I had been having severely painful what I thought to be BH contractions for the majority of the morning. By the time she got there I was having them every 12 minutes almost exactly lasting 45-60 seconds each. I had been trying to just ignore them but Katie kept asking me if I was okay because she'd notice I'd wince and the change in my stomach when they would happen was very noticeable. I told her I was fine and they were just BH.
After she left I got to thinking about it and texted Nate just in case. He was doing some tree work for cash and I wanted him to be on stand by just in case. They eventually stopped for about an hour and I went on my merry way. My mom came over to play scrabble and they picked up ten fold. Nate kept asking if we should go in and my mom was always quick to reply, "Oh no. She'll just KNOW when she's in labor, she's not in labor." So we finished up our game and dinner and went to bed. This is when the fun began. I got to sleep through them for about 45 minutes and then they were just hitting harder than hard one right after another. I got no sleep but was still in denial about being in labor.
Nate made me call my doctor immediately the next morning. He told me to come in and just get checked out. We got to the hospital around 9:45 AM where they hooked me up to the monitor and were picking up the contractions but not very well. The doctor had clinic that day and stopped in at lunch to check my dilation and effacement. He came in around 12:30 to confirm that I was in fact in labor and was at 4 cm. He broke my water and I immediately went to 5.
They got me the epidural and after a while the machine completely stopped picking up my contractions. They started talking pitocin but said they'd give it a while. After about 2 hours the epidural wore off on my left side and the contractions had no mercy. They were coming HARD 1-2 minutes apart lasting for at least 1 minute. They checked me again and I was 6.5. I got another dose in my epi and felt nothing anymore. As soon as I knew it I was 9 then 10 and it was time to push.
I hadn't wanted the mirror in my initial birth plan but while pushing I felt like I was getting no where and it helped a lot to see all that work was getting me somewhere! Only once did I think that I couldn't do it and I just went right into a push instead. Less than an hour later she was here! And despite her coming out with a hand up by her face, there was no tearing. The doctor said I bled a LOT less than normal as well.
They handed her to me and Nate and I just both broke down, he held my head and her hand and I held her and cried into him. It was the most beautiful moment ever and she's the most beautiful thing in my life.
