12:45am Thursday 14 July, 2011.

Woke up to a terrible contraction and partial rupture of the membranes. I woke everyone up and got the kids to the neighbor's house and my husband and I took off. Meanwhile, I called my IP's and told them that this was it and to meet us at the hospital ASAP. Lo and behold, the hubby didn't fill up the gas tank! So, we stopped and got gas, and I was terrified I would not make it to the hospital because my previous labors were precipitous.

We made it to the hospital with plenty of time and my IP's actually beat us there and were waiting to see when their baby would arrive.

I get checked in around 1:20 or so and they tested the fluid and confirmed that yes, I was ruptured. I was admitted shortly after. Contractions were really not coming very regularly or anything. I was pretty confused as to why they weren't coming since the water ruptured, even though it was just partial. It looked like this labor would be kind of long.

At about 3am, labor started to finally kick in, or so I thought. I was having very painful contractions, but they still weren't regular. It seemed every 10 minutes or so but I was so exhausted and in so much pain between labor and my fractured rib that I couldn't deal with much anymore, so they finally let me have an epidural. It was being prepped and I was asked to cough 3x (apparently this helps the anesthesiologist find the epidural space easily). . The epidural was placed and about 5 minutes later I was feeling better but really nauseous and ended up throwing up.

By 7am I felt pressure, but nothing really was happening. I was only at 7 cm...I got sick again. 7:30am there was a shift change and the new nurse (whom at first I thought was mean! lol) came in and estimated baby at 8lbs so I was like "oh, okay, bigger than usual." She suspected the baby's large size had something to do with the longer labor and the failure of the baby to descend.

By 9am I was at 8cm and fully effaced but still at a -2 station so not ready yet. I was still confused as to WHY IN THE HECK it was taking so darn long! A little bit later I was 10 cm but baby still didn't descend. The nurse was a little concerned so had me do some practice pushes but they failed so she decided to start pitocin 1 mIU/mL (lowest possible dose) to augment labor. She said they had to do SOMETHING or I'd end up with another c-section so I was willing to try anything by this point. Contractions got a little stronger, but still very irregular. I was told to sleep or rest and then we'd have to get to pushing.

I rested about 2 hours and then the nurse was to come in. They were a few minutes late so at 11:20 we were getting prepped to push no matter what. Baby was STILL -2! (so I know now when everyone said "oh, you dropped!" they were full of it). I had to do a couple practice pushes and force her to descend into the pelvis. Contractions were still 5-10 minutes apart so this was not easy. I pushed and with three contractions, I finally got her head to show...so she called the doctor. (my doctor actually made this delivery and he wasn't even on call!!!!)

He gets there and baby isn't quite crowned, but we knew that it was going to be the next push or two and she'd be out. I start to push and she crowns, but got stuck. We waited about 5 or so minutes and no contractions so I was getting nervous. FInally, a mini-contraction but I was told to push with everything I could and I did. She still wouldn't come so I had to get an episiotomy. FINALLY she came out! I SUCCESSFULLY completed my VBAC! With a BIG baby!!!!

She was born @ 11:53am a whopping 9lbs 1oz, 20" long. She got a little bruised (although no conehead, lol) from the difficult delivery, but is okay. My IP's were over the moon and she's adorable!

After delivery, I began hemmorrhaging so I only held her for a second at first. Everyone was kicked out of the room while they tried to get the bleeding to stop. After more pitocin and cytotec, it stopped for a little while. I also had to get a dose of Methergine (actually 4 of them) to stop a second episode of bleeding.

I am recovering okay and exhausted and in some pain but am okay. My IP's (now PARENTS!) are doing great with the baby and are just so happy. She is thriving and I know that things are going well for them...

There is a possiblity that next year, they will ask for another baby and I will be their surrogate for a second time.

I am glad the journey is over and I was a part of helping them with their dream. It has been quite a ride, but one that is more than worth it and almost indescribable...so rewarding!!!

Anyway, sorry so long!

Lynn

I had been away Lynn but was waiting to read this!

Just wondered if you cared to share some of your own feelings about this, I can't imagine it was easy, but if you feel like it, I'd love to know how you dealt/still deal with all these feelings.
