We remained on track for a July 24th booked repeat c/s. The night before I spent much of the evening eating fruit and packing and repacking our bags--the fruit was to prevent post op constipation for anyone who wants an easier recovery-it worked!

July 24th-left the house at 8am, was in my room by 0830, they drew blood for a type and screen for crossmatch in case of transfusion, and I was taken to the OR for 0930h. I work there so it was reassuring to be surrounded by everyone I've known and worked with for years. They all knew about my previous horrible experience with Nolan's c/s, and of course I was anxious and teary going in, but I was very well taken care of.

Spinal was put in and it worked this time!! I had a great experience! I was awake and remembered Joey's first cries, I have pictures in the OR with him and dh, and I remember everything! Dr T said I had a "fragile" uterus, but the placenta looked good. When I had my ob consult in June I was advised not to have anymore babies due to my health and age, gd etc-we had prayed about it and since I cannot do hormonal bc I consented to a tubal-hard decision but very appropriate for our family. They did a tubal, and took ALONG time to sew me up, so long that I was thawing out as they were finishing. But I took it all in stride and once I got to recovery I was there the min 30 mins and could move my legs before I left. DH was amazing and brought the baby to RR for me to snuggle and hold. Such a different experience than with Nolan; my epidural ran out with him at the beginning of my c/s, and my anes didn't want me under a general, so I was stoned and in pain the entire time. Baby wasn't doing well, neonatologist was overhead paged, baby taken very quickly to NICU and spent all four days there-I got him to my room ten minutes before discharge. It was an awful experience with him.

Joseph Alec Albin J was born at 10:18am at 7lb9oz, 20.5inches. He's named after FIL, my dad's nickname, and MIL's father. He is perfect!

This time, ob and ped were spoken to by dh and I beforehand and they were very well aware that baby would be in my room with me unless he needed an IV for gd for low glucs. The neonatologist was present in the room for Joey's birth, he took babe to NICU for an assessment, but then had him brought back down to maternity to spend time with us, and mat would watch his glucs. I am so glad we spoke up and were our own advocates this time! I am so proud of dh and I! There is nothing in the world more depressing than trying to recovery from a brutal c/s in a mat room, with your baby nowhere near you. It was awful This time was amazing!

Got taken to my room, had some pics done, neonatologist came to the room to check babe and speak to us saying babe would be better in my room than upstairs Of course we had to call them to come do glucs on him before feeds, but we were expecting that. He never had a low, and did so great! He's been a great bottle feeder and we worked on latching and pumping until my milk came in on Day 3 and he went exclusively to breast, with occasional offerings of 1ounce formula topups, but now he's just EBF. DH brought the ILs and kids in, they adore him! Arthur gave him the required eyeball poke and everyone checked out fingers and toes, they gave him their gift and received theirs. It was amazing! I'm a mommy of five!!!

Bad note: when they did my type and screen before I headed off to the OR, they took me in and did me without knowing my Hgb was 83. They found out once I was done, did bw and my hgb was 74. The next morning, so July 25th post op Day 1, it was 63 and I had to get two units of packed cells. No wonder I was so short of breath and tired while pg, and so much worse those first two days! After my blood transfusions I was a lot less short of breath and could do so much more on my own. I have terrible foot swelling, but I did with Nolan for 21days pp.

The afternoon of July 24th was a blurr, probably b/c I was so low and depleted, but the kids came in and met Joseph, I had visitors I do not remember. That night at 9pm they pulled off my dressing, took out my foley and IV, and I got up to shower. I was on T3's and Advil from the start, nothing injectable.

July 25th I got my two blood transfusions, very SOB before them, had some visitors, did some walking, pain tolerable with T3's. All that fruit I ate the night before OR worked tonight, there is nothing worse than post op constipation, trust me! Eat the fruit and Colace!

July 26th-post op day 2-milk started coming in, very teary, huge hormone shift, but nothing unmanageable. Today the gut gas pains started, they aren't controlled by pain meds and they only go away with walking and a poop, be prepared! Very good and easy baby-he cues and wakes to eat every 3.5 hours and can switch well from breast to bottle, pooping and peeing each time, sleeps btwn feeds, squawks instead of screams-perfect! We are so in love! Its amazing how we can love #5 just as much as the rest of them, amazing!

July 27th-post op day 3, baby is 4 days old, spent 3 night and 4 days in hosp and we are going home! Ped saw Joey and labeled him as perfect! First night went well, EBF, baby feeds every 4 hours days and night. I'm still taking Advil and T3's for pain but its so much better! A teary episode before bed, but manageable.

July 28th-EBF, same feed and wake schedule continues, I got one nap in today, one moment of tears this am but doing okay overall. What a great experience compared to last time!

Lucky mother to five!
