So stoked. Today SO and I went and got all our gardening items and I was his "assistant" while he planted. (Made me frustrated I couldn't dig around in the dirt this year. I love getting dirty! He threw me a few worms though. Silly man.) I am so excited that I will have all this fresh food at my beckoned call this summer while I am off work! I am most excited for the tomatoes! Yum! Nothing better than fresh cut up cherry tomatoes in cottage cheese!
Here's what we planted:
-Tomatoes (Cherry, Grape, and Jet Star)
-Carrots
-Lettuce
-String Beans
-Cucumbers
-Jalapenos
-Yellow Bell Peppers
-Broccoli
-Strawberries
-Pumpkins for the fall! (SO said they will be ripe at the same time as our baby. Such a comedian.)
I can't wait to see it all grow! Gosh i love this time of year!
So, who else has or will have a garden this year? What are you planting? Did you plant last year? If so, what did you enjoy most about your garden?
Lynnii, we got several herbs and are going to plant them in pots! I know it isn't the same, but I can't wait to make salsa using the cilantro! And no waiting involved... SO says I can start using them as soon as we get them planted.
I just have an herb garden right now. I bring in all the herbs that won't survive the winter. They sit on my kitchen window sill
Another month and it should be warm enough to re-plant
I really want to do a veggie garden, but I have to focus more on aesthetic gardening around our house for now lol. When we purchased our home 2 years ago, it was HORRIBLE. the family before us lived there and let the whole yard grow up in thorn thickets. Now that we have a yard, I am slowly picking away at flower plots and whatnot
Hoping to get some shrubs and a lilac bush this summer. I LOVE the smell of lilacs!
Yes! We spent our Saturday in the garden. We put in a large 2ft high raised bed this year, so planted in that, plus more in another large plot on flat ground in the garden.
Raised bed:
Bush beans and beets from seed. Heirloom tomatoes, large red and small pear shaped yellow varieties. Sweet bell peppers in yellow and red and a sweet yellow banana pepper. Sage. 3 kind basil. Marigolds interplanted to help deter bugs that cause problems to the tomatoes and peppers.
Ground:
Pumpkins from seed. Yellow summer squash from seed. Cucumbers (supposedly "burpless" hybrid but we'll see).
Already had:
Rosemary in the ground. Bulbs are now popping up, gladioli and Dutch iris. My newest rose, "blue girl", was planted in February as a month-late anniversary gift, since honey knows I prefer live plants rather than cut, and it's finally looking ready to start budding out some leaves. (All my established roses out front have already grown a foot this year since I cut them back to the ground in January, and are covered over in dark, healthy leaves. I've been waiting for my Blue Girl to catch up!) A half barrel full of osteospermum (chrysanthemum family but like purplish daisies in appearance) and yellow snapdragons, and 2 large pots of mint.

FYI for anyone who cares, tomatoes grow really easily simply planted in a cheap bag of soil from the garden center. Who needs a pot! Carefully make a hole in the bag and plant directly in. It should last the summer, you get to enjoy the produce, and then you can dump the bag out wherever you want some extra soil in autumn. Just be careful you don't place the bag somewhere that allows the tomato's roots to bake too hot. 5 gallon paint buckets also work really well, and are easier to move any time as they may be heavy but come with a handle. Once again, though, SW dwellers should be careful not to let the bucket sides bake too hot during the afternoon.

love to garden not quite warm enough up here to plant yet though. I usually plant lettuce, spinach, radishes, carrots, zuchini, tomatoes, bell pepper, jalepeno's, acorn squash, sweet corn, bush beans and peas! Tomatoes did horrible last year so I hope they do better this year!! Can't wait to get dirty and start planting!
How fun!!! I love love love to garden...I don't grow many veggies because we don't have room (We would if we made another bed, but I don't feel like it since we rent)...I do grow tomatos and strawberry's...In the past i've done pumpkins, zuccini and beans...This year i'm just doing tomatos and strawberry's...The rest of my gardens are flowers....I can't wait to for things to warm up and dry up a bit and to start feeling better so I can start getting things ready to plant...Working out in the garden is my favorite thing to do
I cannot wait!! In my own little garden I am just doing watermelon and cucumbers. Maybe 2 types of cucumbers, regular salad ones and then the kind for canning. To make bread and butter pickles! Yum!!
DH will probably do peppers, tomatoes, and onions. To make home made salsa.
Last year when we lived in Illinois, we had an awesome little garden. It was just tomatoes, peppers and onions, but man those tomato plants grew and produced like crazy!!! I hope we dont get disappointed this year, living in the desert and all.
I so look forward to gardening! I live in the NW so its still pretty chilly outside still. I have tomatoes started inside, potatoes that need planting and lots of seeds waiting to be planted or bought.
last year I planted the above, carrots, parsnip, zucchini, strawberries, onions, scallions, lettuce, spinach and peppers. I can't wait for the warmer weather!
