So I purposely do NOT watch the Strange Addiction or Freaky Eaters shows because they gross me out tremendously. But this morning on the Today Show it was thrust upon me against my will... (Yes someone pinned me down and hid the remote...... OK so maybe I could have changed the channel but it was like a trainwreck. Couldn't look away. ) Anywho... I am nauseated right now as a result. Might not be as powerful if I type it... But this lady..... Was eating CORN STARCH. Straight from the box! Like 5 boxes a DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am beyond grossed out. I can't understand how or why anyone gets these cravings? I mean who has tasted plain corn strach before and would know that is what they want? Ugh.
just corn starch? heck atleast its supposed to be eaten, not in that quantity but its edible, its probably a good thing you dont watch that show because most of the people on there eat way grosser things and lots of them arent food

I saw one show where the girl ate toilette paper! dry, off the roll toilette paper like a roll a day!!! Yuck, don't understand it and really feel bad for those people!
I thought you were going to say something like, couch cushions. Yes, I saw an episode where the girl ate couch cushions. I am laughing as I type this because I still can't fathom why! OMG.
CLOROX??????? I guess my real issue is how in the heck would anyone KNOW if any of that that is the taste they crave? I can't wrap my blonde mind around it. I have read of the pica, and I still don't get it! "Honey? Can you go out and fetch me a few boxes of Ivory soap bars?" "Dear, don't you have some irish spring soap already?" "Oh, yes honey, but I am in the mood for a lighter fare tonight!" LOL I do feel bad for them.... I just can't fathom it all I guess.
You are cracking me up. I am still stuck on couch cushions. I can understand clorox because it is understandable why someone would want to breathe fire...but a cushion? lmao
I saw that this morning too!! They did say the woman had Pica (she ate dirt as a child.) Her extreme behavior was triggered by the death of her young child and they had people that came in and helped her get over it (for the most part... she still has a tablespoon or two every now and then.)
That was funny how Meredith asked that same question about what would make you try it the *first* time to know you crave it?!! Very very strange.
What about the woman who only ate potatoes with cheese? I mean, at every single meal, she ate NOTHING else! No meat, no veggies, ONLY potatoes and cheese. YIKES!!!
The good thing is the guests they were talking to said that once the people admit they have a problem they can help them overcome it. WOW - thought I was having problems craving ice cream!!

My roommate in college had trichotillomania, which is a disorder where you pull your own hair out. Some people with trichotillomania also eat their own hair (trichophagia), and it can be fatal. My roommate wasn't one of those, but she constantly stressed that she might be doing it without knowing it (TTM often goes hand in hand with OCD).
Anyway, it's a difficult disorder to have, and I know it's not something people WANT to do ... they just can't help it. It's an impulse.
