Will you offer one to your baby? When?
I am not oppossed to them, but I will delay offering one until baby is older. Accoring to my breastfeeding books, they can cause issues with breastfeeding ( I had no idea, it seems like every baby has a paci in their mouth, straight out of the hospital, lol!)

Belle didn't like a pacifier. So I didn't bother giving one to Katie after seeing how hard it was for my sil and bil to stop with my nephew when he was older.
I probably will not give this baby one either.

My first two used them, but I took them away around 3 months. Donovan never would take one. This time, we'll see. If I do give her one, it wont be until after my milk comes in, and it will go away at 3 months.

They gave them to Jim in the NICU and he'd mostly just spit them out. I never missed having them. I'm not planning to buy any for Maggie unless we find it's really hard to soothe her without sticking something in her mouth--it's not a philosophy thing, it's mainly I'm too cheap to buy something we may not actually use.

It just depends with Lucia. If there are times where she's inconsolable without something in her mouth, I'll probably give her one but I won't unless she prefers it. However, I'd prefer that she sucked on a paci than on her fingers because pacis are easy to take away, fingers aren't We just took Nathaniel's paci one day, put it in a drawer and he never wanted it again, so hopefully it'll work that well for Lucia lol

We're going to try to avoid pacifiers for a few weeks until she (and I) get ahold of breastfeeding but I am sure after a few attempts at pacifying a crying baby myself I will resort to the paci!

I'll offer one, but not for the first few weeks, as I've also heard they could interfere with breastfeeding.

Elise got one at 5 or 6 days but she needed it but they are very hard to part with she still gets it in her crib, I almost had it gone at months and then we moved so it was good consitency, and then again at 17 months but then she got really really sick so now we decided when she is ready to sleep in a big girl bed we will explain that paci's stay with the crib. All that being said she only got it at bed time by 6 months old

I plan to wait a few weeks too. And I'm planning to take it away by 6 months at the latest. According to a lot of sources, if they keep it past 6 months it is MUCH more difficult to get them off of it.

I think they can be a lifesaver...so never say never ladies ....my oldest was the type of baby that would comfort nurse because he needed the sucking for HOURS...seriously, like 4 hours at a time on the boob...so he got a paci, finally. The hospital gave him one at birth (without me knowing, because he needed a spinal tap at birth, and it was for his stress level), and it DID cause nursing issues, so I took it away, then he got it back at about 4 weeks old when nursing was well established.
He had it (at bedtime only) until 2.5 years.
NO issues getting rid of it (he dropped it into the toilet while on the potty one time, lol)
No teeth issues either (he is 12 now)
My DD hated pacis and sucked her thumb...she sucked her thumb in utero too.....she was STILL sucking her thumb at night (she is 8), and it was causing major teeth issues, so we had an appliance put in for 8 months, and thats how she stopped ($1000 later)
My youngest has a paci...he is 22 months, just at bedtime.
The thumb is a WAYYYY harder habit to break...whereas no kids start school with a paci (well, unless you're Suri Cruise, who was just photographed walking around with one in her mouth here and she's over 5 now)
And the thumb causes more orthodontic problems
I would say most babies need something to suck...it is natural and soothing for them....most will find their thumb if you dont give them something
My kids only liked the gerber NUK ones

We will see what Alivia wants. DD1 always wanted to stay attach to my breast so my lactation consultant suggested that I try the "Playtex, most like mom binky (silicone)" She was a week or two old at the time, and she never had any nipple confusion. We broke her around 2.5 years old. It will be a year this month! After two, she was only allowed to have it, in the car, naptime/bedtime, or if she was hurting (after falling, during shots or any other stressful times). She potty trained at 26 months, so I didn't want to take it from her then and cause any digression in either milestone so we wanted until she was fully trained and took it away. (I just hope she doesn't regress when Alivia is here. IF Alivia wants one, we will try to get her to take a different brand than DD1 took)
DD2 didn't want anything to do with a paci.

Really! wow, i know a small percent of kids may hang on to it, but I'm suprised they actually had her in public with it.
