The flue shot thread got me thinking...

Is anyone getting the Pertussis Vaccine?

I'm kinda worried given there have been cases in my area, but not sure if my SO should get one given he's around kids alot.

I didn't even know they had this vaccine...or if i did know i clearly don't remember knowing! Do pregnant ladies have the green light to get that vaccine though? I'm not getting any vaccine but that's just me.

I received this vaccine (Tdap) right after I had Jamie (you are right - we can't get it while pregnant), so I'm good for this baby.

Obviously, I am going to be on the "no" side.

Dr Bob Sears wrote this for the Huffington post, in regards to the new recommendations that pregnant women receive the Tdap:
The Tdap (or ANY pertussis vaccine for that matter) has NEVER been tested for safety during pregnancy. The vaccine product insert, as well as the letter I got from the pharmaceutical company, states very clearly that the vaccine is not indicated for pregnant women and has never been tested.

So what right does the California Department of Public Health have to allow the use of an untested vaccine in pregnant women? I suppose they have every right. But it just doesn’t feel right to me. New moms can get the vaccine right after their baby is born. Dads can get it during the pregnancy to get a head start. If the vaccine works so well, that should be good enough. Women don’t need to get it during pregnancy.

At least there’s no mercury in the Tdap vaccine! But still, we have absolutely NO indication that this vaccine is safe during pregnancy. Parents beware.

I believe I was given this before I was discharged from the hospital my last delivery. I am not sure how long it is good for but I will get it again if needed.

I wont get it while pregnant but I may after he is born. My niece had whooping cough as a toddler and it was really scary, my mother also loss a sibling to whopping cough (of course my mom is older, in her 70s, so babies dying of whopping cough wasnt all that uncommon)

Whooping cough is actually one of the illnesses I mentioned in the other post about vaccinations that I have seen a kid die from...I will get it ASAP- it's only recently that they started giving the Tdap to adults- at least where I worked, adults got the Td (tetanus/diptheria only) while kids got the Tdap (Tetanus/diptheria/pertussis). My tetanus is due for updating so I will try and get it after baby is born.

To get the Pertussis do u need the tetanus shot? I have a had a Tetanus shot recently. Does it come as a combo pack or can you get each one separately? I just feel weird taking something I know I don't need.

WTH!! you dont put something like that on the **** tv for parents to hear and scare the crap out of them. i just think they could have warned us a different way.

Both Dh and I will be getting it before I leave the hospital. They recently started a program at the hospital where I will deliver where parents and caregivers to a newborn can receive it at not charge before the mother is discharged.

I've never had one. I've also known a child who was vax'd but still got whopping cough. You can't get it during pregnancy bc they dont know if its safe, so how do they know its safe for a breastfeeding mother.
