Baby is given several intervention/prevention meds immediately at birth, regardless of need or not. The three most common are the vitamin k shot, the first hepatitis B vaccine, and antibiotic ointment for the eyes. Where do you stand on these?
I personally deny all 3 in a healthy, low trauma delivery. I am in a monogamous relationship so the risk of an STD issue is nonexistent- eye junk is not needed. Vitamin K in a healthy term infant without trauma during delivery is not usually necessary. I did give it to Owen because he was a BIG boy and I worried about it too much with his size. Normal delivery I would have denied it. And Hep B is not a threat whatsoever to a newborn infant whose mother does not have hepatitis B. I do not have it. I delay that vaccine until school years anyway.
I will be refusing the Hep B shot as well as the eye gunk. Neither of those are necessary. Like Jen said, I am in a monogamous relationship and am STD free. Those are the only pressing reasons to give either of those.
The vitamin K is the only one I'm still up in the air about. I need to do more research and see what the benefits/down sides are, especially if he does end up being a big baby.
Not to be Debbie Downer, but no matter if you trust your partner or not, you can't be 100% sure anyone is monogamous.
I would have sworn on a stack of bibles that my ex-DH was, up until the nanosecond that I found out that he was cheating. Thank God I didn't get anything from him, but the truth is, not everyone is that lucky.
We will delay the eye gunk for the first hour of life. It is potentially beneficial, but it doesn't need to be applied immediately. Waiting to put it on until the baby falls asleep after the initial 1-2 hours of alertness is perfectly acceptable.
The vitamin K I will only do if the baby shows evidence of birth trauma.
The hepatitis will be delayed until later in life. I do vaccinate my children, but not on schedule.

I was going to make a thread about this too lol. Until recently I had no idea what the eye gunk is for and did not know that they routinely vaccinate babies for hep b!
A couple months ago I had my ob do a titer because I wasn't sure if I'd had the hep b vaccine. I am immune. I do not want Kaleb to have this vaccine at birth, I will delay it until he is older. I read that in babies the side effects can look like sepsis...scary!
The eye gunk is in case the baby was exposed to gonorrhea or chlamydia right? Well I tested negative for both. It really is not possible for my husband to cheat. He is ALWAYS working- on a submarine with 100 guys lol. When not at work he is with me. Anyways, I feel comforatble refusing the eye drops. I WANT MY BABY TO SEE MY FACE!

Just my $.02
Not that these were my reasons but they are good ones.
Flynn got all three.
I know a lot of people are against the hep b because their baby won't be having sex and/or sharing needles. However, these are not the only ways to be exposed to 'dirty' blood.

That is why I prefer my kiddos to get them before going to school/daycare. I have been home with them so far so it has not been much of an issue. With me wanting to get to work asap after baby is born I will likely do the hep b earlier. Owen still has not had a hep b vaccine but Leila is fully hep b vaccinated. She was in daycare for a bit when a baby and I just worry when exposed to other kids. I just think birth is TOO early to vaccinate for something if you do not have it yourself.
I dont think you can refuse the eye stuff here, but I will check because I don't want him to have it. We will be refusing the Hep B shot again, because as long as the staff is doing their job, their is no risk. It has also been proven thats shots at this early in life do absolutely nothing. as far as the vit k shot, I don't know. I'm going to ask about that one too
I will do vit K and eye antibiotics....In Canada we do not routinely vaccinate newborns for Hep B unless Mom has it or has not been tested and is "unknown". So I'm clear there because I am immune at this point....I'm pretty sure they get hep B in grade 7 (age 13ish).....
My ex-DH is a police officer and is exposed to hepatitis regularly with the people he deals with in his job. For that reason, we had DS given the shot immediately.
However, I will not give it to this baby until later (same with my second child), as well as the Vit K shot. I have never been asked about an eye gunk shot, so I don't even know if they offer it here yet, but I would say no.

Ditto to this. The hep B shot is given here in a series of three needles every couple of months in 7th grade so it is a non-issue with her right now. I agree with Marti too regarding the exposure to STD's I trust my husband but you never know for 100%.
With my first I didn't know better, with my second we only did the K and the rest we did on delayed schedule..with this one I probably will do the same.. I dont see how the K harms, it has no mercury or damaging perservatives.. do I need to do more research on the k?
Probably not Iritee, sounds like you are making an informed decision!
I really like hearing all these takes on it. And I find it so crazy how things are done so different in other countries.
Vit K is the one I am seriously on the fence about too. It seems harmless, but so does the vit k drink version. I am going to talk to the midwives about this again.
Honestmomma the eye gunk is the erithromyocin(sp?) that they put in baby's eyes immediately at birth. It is to prevent potential blindness caused if the mom has an undiagnosed case of certain STDs. Most are checked for these STDs during pregnancy at some point so the only real need is about potentially cheating partners etc. Plus, as I think it was Meghan is doing, you can have it delayed for the first hour so baby gets that special bonding time when they are so alert.
I deny the Hep B, delay the eye gunk until after we have had skin to skin for at least an hour (baby goes straight to me all covered in junk and will get the eye gunk when he gets weighed after the first hour and feeding, when I get into the shower.) I will accept Vit K, but will request the drink, I believe I read that the drink has less side effects and am looking more into that before delivery.
