how is it best to use elastic for longies?

The longies I made for Emersyn pretty much just fall off - I guess the waistband is too loose. In future i plan to use elastic for the waistband - what type of elastic is best to use? I know you can get stuff that you can knit in? I haven't even seen it before so don't know if this needs to be done while you're doing the waistband, or if it can be added in afterward? OR is it better to do a wider waistband to fold over & put elastic inside (like normal pants)???
