I've always heard that nursing isn't as easy as it looks and not to expect to get the hang of it right away. I went into this expecting sore nipples, pain, etc. But I never ever expected it to suck this bad. I have mastitis again and it is so bad this time. I feel like I have the worst flu ever, my breast is so swollen and painful I can hardly stand it. Feeding her on that side is excruciating. I got an antibiotic yesterday and I've been on it for 24 hours now but I have yet to see an improvement. I think it's turning into an abscess even though the doctor didn't feel an abscess yesterday. I'm so hoping the doctor is right because having a puss filled boil on my boob that has to be surgically drained is about the most disgusting thing I can imagine. I have a crack in that nipple that just won't heal. I had finally gotten her latch corrected but now that breast is so swollen and hard I don't think she can latch on right so it's getting worse instead of better.

Claire only weighs 9 lbs at a month old. she was 8 lbs 6 oz at birth and lost down to 7 lbs 10 oz so I don't think she's gaining enough. She was 9 lbs even on monday and I weighed her again tonight and she hasn't even gained an ounce. She's a pain in the butt to feed too. She constantly pops on and off, sucks a few times and then comfort sucks, falls asleep and won't wake up, cries and refuses to nurse. I'm just sooo over it and feeling so defeated.

Sorry for the rant but I needed a pity party tonight

I'm sorry you're having so much pain. That sounds awful.

BFing has not been easy for us either. I hope things get better for you.

So sorry you're going through that! We're having some difficulties as well-similar to your baby nursing issues but not as bad. Hope it gets better!

Have you tried a nipple shield? It's the only way hell latch. It hurts to adjust to at first but now it's easy to use and he's gaining weight. He lost ten percent of his weight initially after birth and I was having to pump to supplement him since his latch was horrible. I can't imagine what you're going through with the mastitis, I really hope it clears up soon for your sake. Bfing is definitely a lot harder and more work than I thought it be.

I agree with Danielle, try a nipple shield. It's also the only way Cooper will latch. I'm sorry you're having so much trouble, hope your mastitis clears soon.

OMG, that's awful, and I'm so sorry for you! Do you have a pump? I got a clogged duct and my breast was so swollen that my nipple went flat and Robby couldn't latch, either. I had to pump it first to get the milk out so he could get the nipple popped out enough. I know how much pain you must be in. Lots of t's and p's that it gets better for you. Bf-ing seems like it should be so easy and natural, and it is SO hard and frustrating and overwhelming sometimes!

Oh hun, that is horrible! The cracked nipple may be why you've gotten mastitis again since it allows bacteria in. I'm sure you've tried everything, but rubbing a few drops of breast milk into it, letting it dry, and then applying some lanolin is the only thing I know that helps heal cracked nipples. I would do that like every hour or so if you can. I'm so sorry you're having such a hard time! *Hugs*

That sounds awful! I've never had mastitis but I know how painful cracked nipples are. Have you ever heard of Motherlove nipple cream? That stuff really helps heal your nipples much better than lanolin. I would suggest getting some ASAP and go topless for a few days if possible. Open air helps a lot.

Once I got ds's latch corrected and did what I suggested above, my nipples felt much better after just a day or two.

Also, have you tried skin to skin? Doing that for two or three days can fix a lot of things, from latch issues to supply issues. It might help with some of the frustrations you are experiencing with her popping on and off, etc. And I mean like have the baby sleep with you skin to skin and everything. I know it can be hard to sleep that way but it can be very worth it. It fixed my ds's nipple confusion a couple of weeks ago. He wasn't latching right at all. He would open up and suck but he got no suction, the nipple would fall right out. It was like he was sucking on the top of his mouth or something. I went from having to spoon feed him to a corrected latch immediately when I started.

I ended up in the ER on Friday night with a big abscess which had to be drained. It was so horrible. Thankfully they got me on a good antibiotic that works and the mastitis is almost totally gone. The down side is that I'm getting hives from the antibiotic but it's sooo much better than having mastitis. I have to keep going to the doctor every other day to have the abscess cleaned and repacked with gauze and it should heal in 2 weeks or so. I can't even explain how horrible and gross this is and I'm still in shock that it happened to ME. I'm also totally pissed because the ER doc I saw said that the Keflex I was prescribed on Wednesday would never have touched this and I should have been given a much different/stronger antibiotic and there are many that are bf friendly. If I had been given the correct meds in the first place it would never have happened. I think I have officially been through the breastfeeding school of hard knocks....

Oh geez! Yeah that is about as bad as it gets. I've got mastitis now too so I kinda feel your pain. Fever of 103.3.

Hopefully it gets easier for you from here on out! Also, antibiotics can cause thrush, so you might consider a probiotic if you aren't already taking one.

As of periods Nd PMS aren't bad enough that women have to deal with!!

Every morning when I pump now I here this noise like my nipple is clogged but milk is trying to come through anyway. Jesus I hope I don't get mastitis.

Krista, I'm so sorry you have mastitis Just know that only like 3% of cases get as bad as mine did. I'm just incredibly unlucky. I hope it clears up for you soon!

Glad to hear you're doing better! I think the Keflex didn't work for me because it was already too late by the time I got it. I'm sure you don't have anything to worry about

You poor thing! I had this with my first and it was awful...I always have said, I would rather go through labour than have mastitis again....it sucked! My girlfriend also had an abscess, she ended up just pumping and bottling after that.....but they say feed on the affected side first, and be sure to fully empty your breasts..... good luck! I hope it clears up soon!
