My name is Kendra. I am a member of the Feb 2011 Playroom. I have a question concerning my 6week old little girl. She has always had issues with gas and fussiness since birth. I quit breastfeeding 2 weeks ago and she is strictly on formula. She is much much better with the gas, but goes days without having a BM and when she does, like yesterday, it is very hard, dry and had a little blood in it. She cries and cries to go and pushes so hard her little face turns purple. I have tried everything the doctor suggested, apple juice mixed with water, thermometer stimulation, abdominal massage, working her legs like a bicycle, hot water bottle on her belly, switching formulas, etc. She is always hungry/thirsty, eats 3-4oz every 2 hours during the day. She urinates very large amounts at least every hour. She is very fussy and it breaks my heart to see her in such pain. Is it simply just constipation, in your opinion? Or could there be something else underlying healthy wise? My pediatrician has not done any tests, but keeps throwing more things for us to try out there and I am getting tired of it and just want my baby to be better!!! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Have you gotten a second opinion yet? Which types of formula have you tried? How are you mixing them? Are you making sure the scoops are level and not packed? If you're using one with a lot of iron and/or soy, that'll make matters much worse.

Have not gotten a 2nd opinion because we are military and there is only 1 pediatrician on post here. I can ask for a referral somewhere off post though. I really need to do that. We have tried Goodstart Advanced, Similac for gas and fussiness, and Parent Choice sensitivity. I did read about overscooping or packing so I have been really careful lately.

I would be thinking of switching to a soy or goat's milk formula and seeing how that goes. Also, check the packaging to see if it's processed anywhere near wheat or has any wheat based ingredients.

My daughter has struggled with constipation for years and it is heart-breaking. If there is blood, there is a risk of the skin that has ripped getting infected and/or ripping deeper. We've had quite a few of those too and it's so scary.

If worse comes to worse, go for a solution like lactulose which isn't a laxative. It just brings extra water into the bowel and helps the poo come out. It can bring on gas and a few tummy grumbles but at a small dose it shouldn't be too bad.
