I have a 1yr old step son that is having chronic ear infections that seem to either not heal completely or heal for up to a week and come right back. They have started around Feb. of last year. He has been to a ENT that did recommend putting tubes in his ears. We are nervous about it due to the fact that we have heard how he could possibly lose his hearing. The dr has put him on at least three different antibiotics now. I was wondering if there was any other alternatives that anyone might know about that they could share with us?

Thank you!!

Tubes are very common and very safe (my husband had them as a kid nearly 40 years ago... they've been in use for a long time and have improved over time, too). If your ENT told you there would be hearing loss, you need to find a new ENT for second or third opinions. Chronic ear infections can cause hearing loss (much more likely than tubes). The only other suggestion I have is chewing gum to keep the muscles working and ears draining, but that's only helpful in older children. You wouldn't want to do that with a 1 year old.
