Hi there. My name is Cristina and I have a question. My son started coughing yesterday and I took him to the pediatrician this morning. Well, he was diagnosed with RAD, Reactive Airway Disease. Does anyone know what this is or has anyone had this with their children? I thought my son, who is 14 months, has a cold, but the doctor insists this is what it is. From what I understand, it has something to do with asthma, which my son doesn't have since he has never been even sick as of yet except for this cold. Oh, and he was put on a breathing machine. Help?

Hi Cristina,
I just found this board or I'd have commented sooner. My daughter, Anika, was dx'd with RAD before she turned 1 and at 2 she was dx'd with asthma. Usually a dx of RAD turns into a dx of asthma as the child ges older. If this is the first time your son has ever gotten sick, it doesn't seem like that RAD is the problem. If your son is on a breathing machine (I assume that's a nebulizer with albuterol treatments?) it means that your son has some kind of cold or bronchitis that is causing his trachea and/or bronchials to swell. If that is the case, he will be able to stop the breathing treatments as soon as he gets better. It seems (imo) that you Dr. may have jumped the gun by dxing your son with RAD. I would suggest asking your Ped. to refer your son to see a Pulminologist as that's who should be treating him if indeed he has RAD. This way the pulminologist will be able to tell you whether or not he actually has it- and he if does, you can get more information. HTHs!
