So I've been sharing this pregnancy with a friend who is about 6 weeks behind me (due middle of May). I think she is about 26 weeks today. She has all kinds of issues. At first they thought the baby had downs or was developmentally delayed and small. Now they ruled out downs and any major issues, still concerned about growth but not too bad. Then her bp was a little elevated and she had some protein in her urine. So they made her do the 24 hour jug test and she had way too much protein, so they are making her go to the hospital. She has to be done with working and I'm guessing they are going to make her stay at the hospital. They are going to buy her 2 more weeks at least and then I guess deliver the baby. I can't believe in like 2 weeks, she could have a baby.
Can anyone else educate me on their own experiences or what you know?? Does the baby have a good chance at survival??
The good news is that 26 weekers CAN and DO survive with lots of medical assistance, 28 weekers? Even better. I've heard of MANY on my Incompetent Cervix forums who are absolutely fine now even if they were born at 26 weeks. Officially the baby has about a 75-80% chance of survival at 26wks and about 95% at 28wks. Hopefully she has a great NICU at her hospital. There was a 26 weeker born here 2 weeks ago due to pre-e and last I heard that baby doing great! Good luck and I'm praying! Odds are in your friends favor! The longer she can hold out and stay pregnant, the better.
Just a quick update. Her BP has been like 160/100 and they are giving her meds to bring it down plus steriod shots to help develop the baby's lungs. The nurses and doctors are saying that if it doesn't come down soon, they could even have to deliver today. I hope that's not true, even with good statistics at 26 weeks.
Agreed. I hope baby doesn't come yet. If it does, all hope isn't lost but it will certainly be an uphill climb. Praying for your friend and wisdom for her doctors.
The latest is that the placenta isn't getting good blood flow. So they are just taking it one day at a time, but based on her condition now, her doctors don't think she'll stay pregnant through the weekend.
My goodness...I hope she can keep the baby baking longer but the good news is the chances of the baby being ok with medical assistance is pretty good. T&P for them and that it doesn't come down to them having to take the baby early.

Just wanted to update this one last time. My friend had her baby on Sunday. He is doing surprisingly well. I don't know a ton of details, but he only weight 1lb 6oz. Mom is doing much better now. This family has a long road ahead of them, but so far, so good.
I do have to say that when I heard about the birth time (11:47am), I remembered that I was still in church in our ending prayers at that time and I was so praying for her and the baby. I found it strange tho since normally our church service ends closer to 11:30 but it ran over. The power of prayer is definitely strong.

I was just thinking of your friend over the weekend. I will keep her and her baby in my T+P's.
I know very little about premature births but I will say that my step-nephew was born at 22.5 weeks. He was 1 pound 3 oz. He is now 16 years old, healthy and brilliant. Your friend is in my thoughts.
