Before I was pregnant, i knew i was anemic. I wasn't taking any supplements for it though. I started taking iron pills once my doctor suggested it. TWO every day. I guess she forgot I started doing that?Because some blood results came back, and she called to suggest I take iron pills. Um, I ALREADY AM. TWO! On top of the prenatal pills. And I'm still SO anemic that she suggested it again. I'm really upset that all the pills i've been taking havent even been helping. Once i told her i was taking two already, she told me to continue doing that and not take anymore.
I don't eat meat. I haven't for 11 years!! I don't know what to do. After 11 years, just start eating hamburgers?!
The doctor suggested that I take the pills with orange juice, which i hadn't been doing previously.
What do you guys think i should do? Should i jump right into the meat eating? Or should i try the pills with orange juice for a couple weeks and see what happens?
I wouldn't jump straight into a ton of red meat eating unless you have a lot of free time to spend in the bathroom. I was a vegetarian through college and when I started eating red meat again, I had a lot of, shall we say, gastric adventures until my gut learned how to digest it again.
I hope the OJ helps! I have very mild anemia that seems to be reacting well to a small chewable supplement daily.
I was a vegetarian for 7 years, and I've been back to an omnivorous lifestyle for about 5 years. I guess my iron reserves still weren't what they should be (I only eat red meat about once every 2 weeks- which probably makes a difference). Anyhow, my most recent blood tests showed that I'm borderline anemic. My OB put me on iron pills (which contain vitamin C to help with absorption). So there's no guarantee that giving up a vegetarian lifestyle will keep you from becoming anemic.
