We had originally planned on hiring a doula but hadn't found one yet when I went onto bed rest. After the first hospital stay of 11 days, we were so comfortable with the nurses and the procedures at the hospital that we decided that we didn't need a doula after all.
I had one fired her and now have a new one..lol
I found not so great things out about the old one and then one of the leaders at LLL offered to help me for free!!!
I have known this girl since Madison was a tiny baby when I was having breastfeeding issues and had no clue she was a doula. She only does it for friends and family.
I did not have one. I had such a great delivery with DS I figured I would be fine. and with a grand total of 58 minutes in the hospital before she came. I am glad I did not or that would have been a waste of money haha. however, I will say I think they can be fantastic for people that have never had babies or have harder labors than me.
Leddie - I didn't know you were a doula. That's very cool.
I have a friend who is an un-certified doula that will help if needed (like if we can't get a hold of family in time, etc.). Also, a mom of two of my piano students that I've taught for 6 years (we are pretty close) is a nurse and has offered to help if needed. DH is great, so if he's here and we can find someone to watch the kids we'll be all set.
I can't afford to hire a doula but my hospital is a teaching hospital. Part of the nursing students' requirements is to watch a live birth so we signed up for the program and were assigned to the best nursing student ever. She came to a prenatal class with us and comes to most of my appointment. She usually asks great questions that I wouldn't even think to ask. For the appointments that she can't make it to, she texts me to find out how it went. During delivery she will do whatever we need her to do.
