We finally had the appointment today with the pysical therapist. She confirmed Archer does have it. I thought he might not. But when she showed me on his body and neck I now believe it. She looked at his flat head and said we need to improve it because if it becomes really bad his brain will become compressed and of course that's no good. When I brought up I would like to avoid a helmet she said insurance no longer covers them. They say it's cosmetic. If an MRI shows his brain is being compressed they would cover it then. She said they cost four digits. When I previously read up on them I saw around 4000. So most kids have to go other routes now. She showed me where his neck muscle is tight. She showed me when he is on his tummy his back muscle is tight. He has to start going there once a week for 30 minutes. I also have to work on him throughout the day. This stresses me out. One thing is he HAS to do tummy time for 15 mintues several times. I was just doing tummy time on my chest since he hates it and screams. He needs to be flat though. I also have to turn his neck the other direction several times a day for several reps. The thing is he HATES doing all of this The crying really gets to me. I feel so bad for him. I have to carry him a certain way too. And of course stuff I already have been trying like positioning him to where he has to turn his head to interact with us.
Thanks PrincessMom08 for my wonderful siggy!
He probably hates the tummy time and having his neck moved because it hurts. Doing these things will stretch out those muscles and make them better in the long run. I know that hearing him cry because of something you are doing is really hard but try to tell yourself that those few minutes of hurt is really helping him. Maybe try feeding or bathing him right after to calm him a bit. And lots of snuggles!
I'll be thinking of you and praying for your little man.
I know a few people who have had similar issues. They were able to fix the problems with physical therapy and working on the neck muscles. As much as it sucks now, it's just a short period of time to make things better for the rest of his life. I agree with what someone else said, give lots of cuddles after or feed after the "workout.". He will be better before you know it.
I am so sorry Brandy. I was hoping that Archer didn't have this. I know how terrible tummy time can be as Jacob hates it also. And it is so terrible to hear your little guy crying and there is not much you can do because he needs to do his tummy time and have his neck turned. I hope it all gets a bit easier after you do the physical therapy for awhile. We are here if you need to vent or talk.
I'm sure that with the physical therapy you will be able to fix Archer's problem.
I'm so sorry you and your little man have to go through this . Like Melissa said, I'm sure the therapy will work great and in the long run will just be a short time. Stay strong- you are an awesome mom and are doing great for Archer! HUGS
Oh man, I'm sorry... like the other girls said, he probably hates it because it's stretching those muscles out. Poor kiddo, though, of course he doesn't understand what's going on. Unbelievable about insurance not covering helmets anymore to correct the flat spots.... and that's a crazy cost!! I feel so badly for the kids who won't be getting them if they need them.
