I have a question for breastfeeding moms and maybe bottle too, I don't know. I called a lactation consultant about this, but she didn't come up with any answers.
For the last week he's been pulling off my breast crying, wanting to go back on, and then pulling off and crying. I've burped, walked, put him on again. Sometimes he finishes feeding, sometimes I just stop. For bedtime he never does this or in the middle of the night...and he doesn't do this at every feeding. Tonite he did it for bedtime for the first time, but I knew he was really tired. So I gave up, rocked him and he's asleep now. Mind you, I don't think it's my supply, I always see milk dripping down his face. I thought it might be temporary, but he's still doing it. Do you have any thoughts as to why he's doing this?
It could be your letdown is too fast. I have this issue and it doesn't happen every time, but Grant will get pissed because basically the milk is flying into his mouth too quickly. So, he'll pull off, go back on, be upset, etc. I usually just express some milk out into a burp cloth or something and then put him back on.
Well, let down is just the start of the milk flow. If you express during the let down, then you're just getting past the initial fast flow. Then, usually once you're past the initial flow, it is a bit slower. So, I just express out the fast part, then re-latch him
Hayden has been doing the same thing. I always thought it was my supply but she too would have milk all over her face. So I just would rock her or pack her butt when she was crying with my nipple in her mouth and she would stop and go back to eating. So i don't know why she's doing it but i found a way for her to stop.
