When I had DS #1 I had him at 9:06pm and we were both discharged the next day at like 1pm so I was there 16hr after having him but I had to beg the ped. and my Dr to let me go. The hospital was so uncomfortable I hadn't slept all night because I couldn't get comfortable enough to actually sleep and then the nurses coming in like every hour even after I asked them not to. It wasn't completely horrible but I really wanted out.

I too would ask what your hospitals policy is and also what your Dr policy is because the Dr and the ped are the ones that release you and baby.

Will you ....
Sing happy birthday? No
Change him or her into cloths you brought from home right away? Not until we are going home. Let them worry about doing laundry
Use the diapers they give you at the hospital? Hospital dipes! Plus I guiltily admit I stash them and make them give me more. My hospital will put a new pack just about every time I send the baby back to the nursery
Nurse right away or wait (bottle or breast)? breastfeed as soon as I'm out of recovery from my section w/ instructions not to give the baby anything until then
Stay in the hospital or birthing center for very long? my shortest stay w/ a section has been 4 days and that's if I beg to go home!
Wear the hospital gown or wear one of your own during labor? I'm naked w/ a sheet over me for my section...lol...but I use the hospital gowns until the bleeding let's up a bit so I don't stain my own clothes!

Will you ....
Sing happy birthday? We didn't with DD... I guess at only the 1 year
Change him or her into cloths you brought from home right away? not right away since I like the skin to skin.... But during the hospital stay yes
Use the diapers they give you at the hospital? no we bring our own, except the first diaper ever used will be from the hospital also I don't think the hospital actually provides diapers for the stay... Just the initially diaper at birth!
Nurse right away or wait (bottle or breast)? breast, with DD I fed her within 30min.. I'd like to do the same...maximum an 1hrs after
Stay in the hospital or birthing center for very long? nope after giving birth here usually it's 1, max 2 nights! Unless u have a csection is about 5 days
Wear the hospital gown or wear one of your own during labor? I wore the hospital one when I gave birth to DD, will probably do the same... But after I changed to my own clothes

Will you ....
Sing happy birthday? Probably not...but if the mood strikes...
Change him or her into cloths you brought from home right away? no not until we're on the way home
Use the diapers they give you at the hospital? If they have them then yes, otherwise we'll have some 'sposies for the first few days and we'll bring them with us
Nurse right away or wait (bottle or breast)? as soon as I'm able
Stay in the hospital or birthing center for very long? Hospital policy is 24 hours or less for vaginal delivery, they play it by ear for c-sections, usually 3 days
Wear the hospital gown or wear one of your own during labor? Gown, I don't want my own clothes ruined[/QUOTE]

5 days for a csection?!?! Wow!!
With DD2's csection I was admitted at 12:30pm on Friday and was home before lunch on Sunday.
I was determined to get outta that bed asap though!

Sing happy birthday? Probably not
Change him or her into cloths you brought from home right away? I won't right away. We usually do it the next day.
Use the diapers they give you at the hospital? Yes, we won't use cloth until we get home.
Nurse right away or wait (bottle or breast)? Nurse as soon as I can.
Stay in the hospital or birthing center for very long? I will more then likely have another c-section (UGH) and will stay as long as possible.
Wear the hospital gown or wear one of your own during labor? I won't have a choice in this. The hospital gown it will be for the first day. After the catheter is out and I shower, I'll change into my clothes.

Yes 5 days is standard for a section. It's major abdominal surgery! That doesn't seem safe to have a major surgery and go home less than 48 hrs later. I get up and out of bed the same day as my sections but have never stayed less than 4 days and I'm pretty much a c-section veteran w/ 5 under my belt (no pun intended). I'm up and practically running by the next morning but I still have drains in place until day 2, but not all Dr's place drains. It prevents infection. I know this time I'll stay longer b/c of the hysterectomy.

Sing happy birthday? Nope
Change him or her into cloths you brought from home right away? Nah, just when we leave
Use the diapers they give you at the hospital? Yup! We Pampers!
Nurse right away or wait (bottle or breast)? Yes, breast.
Stay in the hospital or birthing center for very long? We'll stay for about a day and a half, I think.
Wear the hospital gown or wear one of your own during labor? OMG, hospital gown!!! Too messy for my own clothes! I won't change until we leave, LOL!

Sing happy birthday? I've never thought to do this before, but it would be cute to have the boys sing it to their new baby brother/sister and have DH video it.
Change him or her into cloths you brought from home right away? Not right away...just for pictures and then going home of course.
Use the diapers they give you at the hospital? Of course! And at my hospital they encourage you to take whatever is left in the drawer before you leave. I may take a page out of Charity's book and stash a few earlier, too.
Nurse right away or wait (bottle or breast)? Bottle feed whenever we're semi-settled.
Stay in the hospital or birthing center for very long? With #1, I had him Saturday at 4:47pm and left late Monday afternoon. With #2, I had him Sunday night at 11:58 and talked them into letting me leave Tuesday afternoon. The policy here is that baby needs to stay for a full 48 hrs. I ended up having to take DS2 to the peds a couple days later for his "early release check up". I was just ready to get home to DS1 though! I guess we'll play it by ear this time, and it will depend on what time of day he/she is born.
Wear the hospital gown or wear one of your own during labor? Hospital gown during labor and at night. I may or may not change into my clothes during the day for visitors.

Sing happy birthday? haha, cute, but no
Change him or her into cloths you brought from home right away? Nope
Use the diapers they give you at the hospital? Yep
Nurse right away or wait (bottle or breast)? Yeah, I will, I mean it doesn't have to happen in the first 10 seconds or something, but before too long for sure
Stay in the hospital or birthing center for very long? til my midwife releases me, I'm in no hurry to get back to cleaning up after everyone and all that
Wear the hospital gown or wear one of your own during labor? Remains to be seen, I've done both on this one

Most docs want to keep you a min of 24 but prefer 48 when you have your first. Since you have no l&d history, they want to ensure you won't hemorrhage. In addition, they want to watch your uterus shrink down a bit to be certain you have no remaining parts of the placenta, etc left behind.
This is just the norm I have seen with my work in medical settings.

Sing happy birthday? I never really thought about it...maybe we will. =)
Change him or her into clothes you brought from home right away? Yes, we will probably after we're settled into a post partum room
Use the diapers they give you at the hospital? Yes, if we have her here, they use pampers which is what we'll be using at home anyway.
Nurse right away or wait (bottle or breast)? I'm hoping to breastfeed a few minutes after birth
Stay in the hospital or birthing center for very long? With DS1 I had to stay 3 days because I couldn't pee after being irritated from the catheter...so horrible! With DS2 I left exactly 24 hours after he was born...I'd much rather leave ASAP! Hopefully all will go well this time so I don't have to stay for more than two days.
Wear the hospital gown or wear one of your own during labor? Hospital gown. I'll change into my own clothes after showering.

Sing happy birthday? No, probably not.

Change him or her into cloths you brought from home right away? No, I'll wait until the day we leave the hospital to change her into clothes be brought.

Use the diapers they give you at the hospital? Yep!

Nurse right away or wait (bottle or breast)? I'll try to nurse right away. I'm having a c-section, so as soon as I'm in recovery I'll try.

Stay in the hospital or birthing center for very long? With a c-section they usually want you to stay 3 days, but I'm going to see if they'll release us at 48 hours if all is well. The did with my last one, so I'm hoping this will be the same..
Wear the hospital gown or wear one of your own during labor? I'll wear the hospital gown the first day so I don't get blood and stuff all over it. I'll take my own clothes to wear after that.
