At Ethan's last appointment, the dr said we could go ahead and start on cereal if we wanted. I was positive I wasn't going to do cereal, and just start solids next month when he turns 6 months. But the past few days it seems like his fussiness has increased by like a million, so I am considering starting on cereal and seeing if it might help with his reflux. The question I have is which one should I start with? I know most people start with rice, but I read it doesn't have much nutrition to it, so I was considering starting with oatmeal, and then barley. Has anyone else started on something other than rice?
I started with rice for me it wasn't about the nutrition as she's gettig that with her milk but its about learning how to swallow and eat with a spoon. So I use rice cereal once a day. I add pumped milk or formula whichever I have on hand, poor an ounce in a bowl, then pour cereal in slowly and mixing until I get the consistency I want. Sometimes I have to add more milk. McKinley started out liking it really watery and thin. Slowly starting to like it a little more thicker.
Won't start any real puréed food until 6 1/2-7 months.
I started with Barley as I was afraid of constipation with rice. All cereal don't really have a nutritional value, they are mostly a sourse of iron for babies after 6 months ( when breast milk no longer has enough iron for your little one ), calcium and vitamim B. You can take any cereal from the first stage and your LO will be ok
What she said ^^ none of the cereals have nutritional value, my pedi said we could skip it if we wanted and go straight to solids. I tried oatmeal, Addy didn't like it too much. With Reagan, we did rice first, she loved it. I might try the rice with Addy, except that we have already started solids - she currently eats squash, sweet potatoes and we just added carrots yesterday. I might go back to cereal when we start fruits so she has "breakfast" too, not just dinner
If you do cereal, the box will usually give suggestions on how to start...you can use formula or breastmilk, whichever you give your baby or prefer. Typically you start with about 1 tbsp of the cereal to about 3-4 tbsp of the liquid. It's really runny that way, so I thickened it up a bit more, but you can start with that and see what happens
i think with most cereal its more of a filling thing than nutrition.
I started Raini with rice cereal mixed with a bit of formula, then less formula as it went on. she didnt like the cereal at first but it taught her how to swallow solids. now she refuses cereal all together after having a taste of actual baby foods.
Just lurking from August 2012 PR. Finn will be 4 months old this weekend. I hope you don't mind if I intrude.
I mentioned I started him on cereal and well, it didn't go over smoothly.
Finn loves his rice cereal. Next up, barley!
