I'll preface with that my mom has had 4 kids and her water never broke once naturally. I've had two pregnancies/births and my water has spontaneously broken both times.
I was asleep in bed both times.
With dd1 I felt/heard a pop (even though I was sound asleep) jumped out of bed and felt a warmness trying to come out, kinda like when you start to pee your pants when your running to the bathroom and holding your legs together to keep it in. I ran to the bathroom and as soon as soon as I squatted to sit on the toliet my water splashed all over, mostly getting into the toliet. It's like the baby's head slid down and kinda plugged the leak and I trickled from there on out with little gushes here and there.
With dd2 I again was sound asleep and felt/heard the same pop. This time I knew what it was and just held a towel between my legs.
Both times my contractions didn't start right away, it was about an hr or so after my water broke before I felt the first contraction.

My water always breaks around 8 cm right before I start pushing (usually the contraction before I start pushing). I always sail from 7-10 cm in a matter of 1-2 contractions. It always feels like a dam has broken away and flood waters are let through, lol. It has happened during a contraction each time, and it feels good at first, like a relief. Then as soon as my contraction peaks, it's more intense than ever. Then I get an overwhelming urge to push. And my body pushes whether I do or not.
I was getting out of bed after a nap around 11am and as I stood up...GUSH!!! A huge puddle of water on the floor...it continued to flow and then trickle for the next 2 hours. I put a pad on and soaked thru within 10 minutes. I had a fresh pad and 4 towels under me on the way to hospital & those were drenched and I looked like I had peed myself by the time we got there. : lol:
With #1 I was in bed and sat up and there was small gush and I went to the bathroom to be certain and little gushes with every step. No dramatic floodgate just continuous small gushes.

My water has only broken on its own once. When it did I felt a "pop" then of got out of bed walked half way around and it started to gush. It was so gross and I was poed I had to change my clothes as I was on the phone with the doc when it happened. Of corse I didn't have a lot clean at that time since we hae guests that weekend and hadn't done any laundry... I delivered 2.5 hours after that.

I was at the in-law's house for dinner. I had just gone to the bathroom and was walking back to the couch when I felt a small gush. I figured it probably wasn't pee since I had just gone. I called L&D and they said I could come in and they could test. I borrowed a towel from MIL and my husband and I went home first to grab our bags. When I got out of the car at home there was a huge gush and my pants were soaking wet.
With my second I had them break my water at 9cm.

I was asleep and woke up because I needed to pee. As soon as I stood up there was a small gush and I trickled all the way to the bathroom. I wasnt sure if I peed myself or it was my water breaking. Once I figured out it was my water I woke my husband up and called L&D. I did take a shower before I went... so did my DH lol Contractions didnt start till we were halfway to the hospital.
For my first I was asleep on the sofa (was more comfy at the time) and it was Sunday night/Monday morning smack on 37 weeks. About 4am I had to pee and thought I had started to wet myself....groggily got up to go stood up after wiping and more trickled out....I thought "that is weird" wiped and stood up and more trickled out......then I knew and I called out to my husband at the time (ex) and told him water had broke but I was going to take a shower first so he could sleep a tiny bit longer haha.....
Too funny that our stories are all very similar, ladies!
I was asleep and woke up because I had a feeling that I needed to pee. As soon as I rolled over to get out of bed, I felt a leak. My husband was awake, watching TV, and I told him "either I just peed myself or my water broke!" I went to the bathroom and sure enough, after I finished peeing, water was still leaking. I changed my pad at least 3 times before I said we might as well just go and headed to the hospital. I figured I could stop it or at least get it under control before we left... no such luck. With every step into L&D, a gush came out. I was completely soaked by the time we made it to L&D. I was totally not expecting it to break on its own since most everyone told me it wouldn't. Boy were they wrong!
My water broke naturally with my first labor. It kinda feels like you peed yourself. i was in bed and around midnight I got up to pee (or so I thought) and it felt like I peed myself. So I went to the bathroom and did a sniff but it didn't smell like pee. I changed my undies and put a pad on and when I stood up from the toilet it happened again. That is when I thought that maybe my water had broke but I didnt' want to be the one in L&D cause of peeing her pants thinking she was in labor LOL When it happened a third time, we took off to the hospital.
@ 40w with my 1st I was crouched down looking at something in home depot. When I stood up I felt a small gush & thought omg! this is it! called my ex who was at work, he said go to my parents (close by, our house was over an hr away) & call him when I was having contractions. By the time I got to my parents I was mortified to realize I'd peed myself lmao (NOW lol) TG I was wearing a skirt so no one noticed.
Fast forward 2w, I'd been having contractions all night long, but was able to sleep mostly until about 5am when they were getting stronger. I got up & was making cookies to pass the time. Around 7am I had to pee, went & did it. Came back into the kitchen & sat down for a contraction & felt/heard the pop, then the gush....now this time I wasn't telling anyone until I was sure lol. So as my ex came around the corner into the bathroom to check on me I was sniffing my undies....we laughed about that forever lol.
I didn't go into the hospital until 1pm, when they checked me they said my water hadn't broken...***?! My dr came in soon after, she checked me and said oh yes it has as she could feel babies hair. Turns out I had a hindwater break (up behind the baby instead of over the cervix) & they can seal up again. So she could tell from the difference as i'd been in to see her just 2days before.
The other 2 were c sections. I remember for my 2nd the HUGE gush as they cut me open & they actually brought sheets or towels in for the floor & the drs were making jokes about wearing rubber boots lol.
Mine broke on its own all 3 times, although the first was the most dramatic. I was laying down on my bed after having contractions all day and my mom was running my back....when all of a sudden I heard and felt a loud pop and it scared me so much that I jumped right off the bed!
The second and third labor my water broke on its own around 7/8 cm. No big pops those times
I woke up at 4am and felt a trickle that I couldn't stop. I went to the bathroom and the discharge had changed. I tried to stop it and it wouldn't. I figured my water had broken but I wasn't sure. My back hurt too. DH woke up and asked what I was doing. I told him that I thought I was in labor. The next thing I heard was him snoring!!
Fast forward 4 hours. I went to work and figured I would call ob when their office opened. They had me come in and checked me - yep def water broke. Walking into the hospital I had the huge gush! I looked at my dh and siad that if that had happened at 4am I would have had no doubt.
wow! after reading all of these I turned to DH and said "i think around the week of my due date I'll need to keep a towel next to the bed!" lol thanks for sharing ladies!
I RWith my first pregnancy I was almost 38 weeks and had been having contractions for 2 days 3-4 min apart and had been to the hospital a few times but they kept sending me home because I was not dialating past 1cm. So on the 3rd day and 3rd trip to l&d they were about to send me home for the 3rd time and I was getting up out of the bed to get dressed and it was like niagra falls. It gushed everywhere. I quickly jumps back in the bed and and called the nurse all happy and said " you can't send me home now"
With my 2nd I was induced and they.broke my water for me.
ElizMommy, my husband would fall asleep too. I read your post and tried to imagine having the courage/strength just be nice enough to let him sleep, but I'm thinking I'd probably smack him for it so he'd wake up and suffer with me.
