Do you use baby powder to prevent them? I was adding it to my list of things to get and researching a good brand when I came across a lot of pediatricians recommending to skip baby powder all together as it can cause breathing and other issues.
If you don't use it, how do you prevent diaper rashes? Do you use a cream with every diaper change?
Sorry for all the seemingly dumb questions, but I've never done this before.
I use Burt's bee's baby powder (It's talc free, talc is the ingredient pediatricians recommend avoiding). I also use straight up corn starch. My boys need it in the summer time with their cloth diapers. They sweat a lot and the baby powder helps keep the moisture from their skin. Most rash creams aren't safe for cloth diapers, so I like to try and prevent. I generally don't use it with newborns though. Younger babies don't wear their diapers long enough to have very many diaper rash problems. If a young baby has a rash problem, it's usually an allergic reaction, a virus, to the diaper be worn, or a food that was eaten.
My daughter never had a diaper rash and we never used anything (except cloth diapers) so I don't really have any advice, other than I know that baby powder isn't recommended b/c it being so easy to inhale.
I've never used baby powder with either of my boys and never have had issues with diaper rash. I think frequent changes help and some naked time to let their butts and privates area breathe a bit. My YDS had some bumps a couple of times but that has only been when we've used disposables. My MIL would dump that stuff on him even though I had asked numerous times NOT to, and it would create a paste which would give him a rash ,
I never used baby powder on DD. I used to use vaseline to prevent diaper rash (as taught in our childbirth class), then we switched to A&D, but now I don't use either one and if she ever has a hint of redness I use my own homemade cream to clear it up.
Take plain yogurt and mix it with enough corn starch to make a paste (not too runny). Apply that to a diaper rash, especially great if you catch it at the start of one. I make a batch to keep in the fridge for a few days and the coldness probably also feels soothing.
I found this worked better and costs a lot less than the stuff doctors prescribe. Plus, it's natural!
I've always thought baby powder wasn't safe also. We used a variety of different creams for diaper rash but I think air time helped the most. I like the yogurt idea too, might have to try that this time if we need it.
We used disposables and never had a problem. As long as you change them frequently, it shouldn't be a problem unless your LO just has very sensitive skin.
I'm so jealous for those of you who never dealt with rash. Both my boys went through a phase at around 18 months where we had to deal with rash issues. It was a battle both times. I'm thankful for corn starch and talc-free baby powder to get me through it!
Oh- and A&D ointment was great too (although always have to use a liner if using this with a cloth diaper).
I have never heard that you shouldn't use baby powder. I still use it on my son after his bath to make him smell nice. I used it on his bum after changes, too, yes. Nobody ever told me I shouldn't, and the health visitor saw me changing him on more than one occasion. That said, he didn't get much in the way of nappy rash. When he did, I used Sudocrem and it sorted it quickly and easily.
I will definitely look into the Burt's Bees powder, thanks Que - I can't imagine not using any powder at all.
I would also advocate giving baby "free bum time" as we used to call it with Daniel right after a poop. I think that helped a lot.
Is it just talc powder that causes problems? The baby powders I have (got them from friends and never used them) say they're talc free and are pure corn starch.
So if it's just corn starch that should be OK, no?

My son has never really had diaper rash issues so we've never used anything! Once or twice he had redness and we used triple paste, but I think they were more food sensitivity related than true rashes. Strawberries and peaches always turn his butt red

Yeast overgrowth can cause a rash as well. Perscription creams are useless
We used both cloth and disposables and no powder. He only got a bit of rash every once in a blue moon and between bare bum time and vaseline, it cleared up in a day or two.
I like the yogurt idea. I prefer a natural remedy so I'll remember that one , thanks
i didn't prevent or use anything daily. I just treated what popped up. Heat rash? corn starch. Diarrhea rash? Desitin. Frequent poop butthole redness? aquafor
I actually only used it when she had a rash (burt's bees). You can get a corn starch based powder that is gentler, but I didn't use it on her bum. My first was born in May, right when the summer weather starts here, so I would use the baby powder to keep all her little neck/arm creases dry .
