He's been crying and screaming bloody murder for 6 hours now. He acts hungry but refuses to eat after a few seconds. We hold him, rock him...but he just cries and screams. I roll him up with his legs to his chest and he farts big time. He passes gas a ton... is he really colicky or is it just gas? He farts more than he ever used to. So right now I'm sitting at the laptop with a vacuum youtube vid going and now he passes out. So what does that mean? If it's really gas would he be fine with noise? What about colic? I'm so lost here. This can't keep up at night or DH will not be able to drive to work for lack of sleep.

I think the vacuum noise is similar to what they could hear in in utero and that is why it is calming...not necessarily gas related.

But as you posted about gripe water, give that a shot and maybe you won't have to use the youtube video.

When is his next dr.'s appointment? Can you talk to them about it?

I'm lurking, and a FTM, but have you heard of this video?

Amazon.com: The Happiest Baby on the Block: The New Way to Calm Crying and Help Your Baby Sleep Longer: Dr. Harvey Karp, Nina Montee: Movies & TV

I have heard from many, many people that it works WONDERS - and the fact that he fell asleep to vacuum noises made me think of this video. I just bought it recently and am going to watch it before my little one is born! Just a suggestion, good luck!

Also a lurker!

First of all *hugs* I know how hard it is.

Second, white noise like a vacuum cleaner, waterfall or even just doing 'shhhhhh' helps tremendously the little ones to go to sleep since it sounds exactly like what they could hear in utero. In the first few weeks, what helps the most is trying to recreate the same environment they spent 9 months in: sounds, swaddling, skin to skin...

At first, DS would not sleep more than 30 minutes at a time and would scream for hours between that until we started keeping him swaddled or in a Moby wrap. So I feel your pain.

Third, my son was also a gassy baby. He'd look so uncomfortable at night, always grunting, writhing about and crying. I'd do the same and pump his legs and he'd fart away and look marginally better for a little while. Gas drops and gripe water can help but in the end, it went away on its own. Like his ped said: if you had a diet consisting of only milk, you'd have tummy problems too I found that babywearing helped too with gas pains.

I hope you'll find some things that helps both you and baby. It's a rough patch to go through but it'll pass, I promise

You know...I was going to mention happiest baby on the block also. You can see the techniques by search on youtube. Look for the 5 "S's". I doubt this will magically fix everything but it can help a lot. Turns screamers into calm babies in an instant.

Also look on youtube for Dunstan baby language....it will help you distinguish the different sounds of your baby's cries....you can actually tell what's wrong by the sound of the cry. Again...probablyisnt going to solve everything but will help you feel more in control to know what is bothering him.
I really feel for you, Hun....I know what this is like. It really reminds me of the colic my first had. I wont say how long it lasted cause that's not important right now but I will tell you that it all got better in a day......he stopped screaming in his carseat, started letting us lay him down to sleep, and stopped spitting g up, all in the same day. I had myself convinced I was just a rotten parent for not being able to help him....i thought it was just my inexperience or something. but him getting suddenly better made me realize I wasn't crazy and there was genuinely something going on with his lil body. Many prayers for strength for you....you are doing a good job mom!

lurking...

With DS1 we wore out the motor in our dyson because we ran it to put him to sleep EVERY time! The minute we switched it on, he was out.

Do what works!! This will pass.

I'd call your pedi and ask their advice. If he does have reflux, there is medicine they can give him to make him a happy baby again.

Read this...it's from the Colic Calm website and explains some of what the nurses in the NICU told me (and they also said it can be in full term newborns). It talks about gas drops, gripe water, and of course sings praises about Colic calm (but it is still very informative)
Cause and Treatment of Infant, Newborn and Baby Gas Problems

Hey sweetie, Im visiting from the Dec 2012 board.....

My 2nd baby was exactly like you describe. She screamed for the first 3 months of her life, never slept... It was awful. So I totally feel your pain, you are not alone! *hugs*

I did a LOT of research when all this was going on (because I was clueless, my first was an "easy" baby!) and Ill tell you what I found... First of all, are you nursing? If you are, some babies have a dairy intolerance and so you will have to cut all dairy out of your diet. It usually takes 2-3 weeks to start seeing results. I tried this but it still didnt work. We tried just about everything... Gas drops, Colic Calm, gripe water, Happiest Baby on the Block (the 5 S's), bicycling the legs, cutting out dairy, etc.... It was truly terrible. I even took her to the ER when she was 4 weeks old because I just KNEW she was about to explode or something because she would cry herself into oblivion then pass out.

What worked with Clara was that she had silent reflux and we put her on Prevacid and it worked wonders!! So definitely look into reflux or silent reflux (that's when they dont spit up)... Reflux Rebels infant acid reflux and colic has a quiz you can take to see if your baby might have it, a dairy or soy intolerance, or something else.

In the meantime, what helped for us, was either putting her in the swing strapped up in the swaddleme blanket, or putting her in a Moby wrap and bouncing on the yoga ball. That was the ONLY way I could get her to sleep for a long time. There were days I'd bounce her all day long. It SUCKS, I know, but right now just try to survive! It got much much better at about 3-4 months. I didnt have to bounce her anymore, she cried less, etc.

You can PM me if you want to talk more about it!

Thank you, ladies. I'm so tired I can't think half the time. I did call the Dr. She asked to see a dirty diaper today to check for milk protein allergy. It was negative. So she gave me gas drops to try. We'll see how he does tonight, but I'm sure I'll be up all night again with him I will look into that quiz link as well.

So far only the vacuum works but even that don't last long until he's ready to be done. We watched the Happiest Baby on the Block DVD and yes it does work some to calm him. We actually started doing the 5 S's a few weeks ago when he was just not sleeping much and it worked well for us until he started this colic thing. Now it only calms him for a few minutes if at all. And I "SHHHHHHHHHH" my heart out in his ear so he can hear me over his screaming and sometimes it will make him stop for a minute but never lasts long. We have a swing and he hates it. I have a Moby wrap but he seems too small for it yet but I might try that tonight if the gas drops don't work. I'm just tired and scared that once DH goes back to work I'll be alone at night with a screaming baby and I'll be crying along with him all night, feeling helpless. And worried DH will fall asleep driving to work and get hurt. I'm really scared about that.

Hun I got this monkey as a gift and it so helps sooth E. You might want to look into it. It has 6 settings with two different noises, one is a shhhh like noise that sounds like crashing waves and the other is a lullaby. It also has a built in night light.

Hugs!! Teddy was a really difficult baby too. Also, it may be too early to detect protein intolerance so just be on the lookout for weird mucousy or green diapers. My son's wasn't properly diagnosed for a long time. It turned out nuts and eggs were what were really bothering him. He improved on hypoallergenic formula.... but that was at 5 months Hoping it's just gas, and that he works it out.

Just an FYI, but a milk allergy is NOT the same as a dairy intolerance. Is his poop green and mucousy, like slimy? That is a sign of it.

And no, he isnt too small for the Moby. Seriously, try it and bouncing on a yoga ball (they are $10 at Target!), it was a miracle worker for us.

We use the blow dryer to get Pippa to sleep, and Gripe Water helps with gas.
