So now that I'm not PG any more, I seem to be losing my hair a lot more than normal. What the heck is going on? Every time I shower there's a mess of hair in the drain and when I brush my hair the brush ends up looking like it's been weeks since I cleaned it out! Anyone else getting this? What should I do? It's starting to look a little thin on the very top now I don't want to go bald!!! Help!
It's a normal postpartum issue. When you are pregnant, your hair follicles do not shed as often, giving you that beautiful and thick pregnant lady hair. When you are postpartum, your hormones change and your hair starts shedding at a more normal rate and you start to lose the hair you accumulated during pregnancy. It generally slows down sometime in the first year. I thinned out so much after baby #3 that I had to cut my dreadlocks off because they were getting too many weak spots from the thinning- and the thinning was so apparent at my scalp with my dreads. It was a sad day.
Oh yeah the PP hair loss usually kicks in around three months and lots of women wind up with bald spots.
I switched hair dressers earlier in the year and she asked if I had a two year old. Surprised I said yes and she said she could tell by the length of regrowth around my face.
That's a neat trick, Shannon! This is the reason I chopped off my hair while still pregnant. I'll be going even shorter very soon. I hate the hair loss stage.
Yep I cut mine pretty short in the third trimester too in anticipation of the loss. It makes it easier on the shower drain when I'm losing a wig's worth each time haha
Yikes! SO it's normal. Rats! I guess I need to get mine chopped then. It's all over my clothes too. And I'm forever finding it stuck to Elias's clothes as well. I hope it comes back in. When my hair is wet you can see how thin it is now.
I forgot about the hair loss. I have so much hair that I shed all the time and it makes no difference.

Same here! I got my hair cut on Saturday and my hairdresser could really tell. I've also noticed regrowth already around my hairline. Not fun b/c there's lots of grays.

I normally shed a ton all the time so when I'm pregnant I love that I stop shedding hair all over the place. I haven't started losing mine yet since having Connor but I remember it starting up again about 3-6 months after I had DD.

I knew shedding was normal, but it doesn't START until around 3 months?! I'm in trouble, if so, cause I've already been shedding a TON. I think there's about as much of my hair in the vacuum as there are from my two pomeranians these days.
You can take a vitamin called Formula 50 for the hairloss. However, you have to ask for it behind the pharmacy counter. It's for surgery patterns, post partum, etc. It's helped me a ton....in addition...keratin treatments.
Yup, mine just started, like literally.....my last shower I seemed to lose much more than I have been. I have long hair now, but I would love to chop it about now.
So glad to come back to the forum and read of others struggling with hair loss. Not sure if it's due to being pregnant with twins, but the hair loss started early, about 1.5 months post partum. Now at three months it's kicked into high gear and it's hard not to be worried it'll all fall out.
I'm looking at the recommended Formula 50 vitamins. Any idea if they're ok for breastfeeding?

Mine started a few weeks ago and I have SUPER long hair. I love it though so I don't want to chop it but I shed more then the dogs now! How long does it typically last?
I hate this phase. Luckily my hair is so thick you don't even notice is missing, except for the mess on the bathroom floor. My son has figured out it's shedding and loves to run his hands through my hair and see how much he can "pull out" Last time my shedding didn't start until around 6 months, this time 3 months so it definitely varies.
Brittany (BlessedLife): I heard it lasts 6 months to a year. I'm hopeful that it'll be over by 6 months personally! I also have semi-long hair but am going to try cutting off a few inches to see if it helps it stop falling out (it keeps tangling amongst itself and then handfuls come out.)
