I went to my Ob last week because I have a UTI. They told me that I am not gaining enough already, and that I need to gain 25-30 lbs this pregnancy. I think that is absolutely insane. I am at a healthy weight. I'm right in the middle of my healthy weight range. Why do they think I need to gain so much? With my last pregnancies I only gained at max 18 pounds. Has your Dr told you what you should gain, and how much did they say?

that seems crazy! the baby is tiny and not packing on pounds yet! I'd say do your thing as long you are doing the smart thing.
My MW and I agree that due to my weight I shouldn't gain much, if at all. with both my other pregnancies I lost a good deal.

Hmmm....my MW is never concerned about weight in the first tri, as it's so common for women who are sick with MS to often lose a few lbs. I never gained weight in the first tri in my pregnancies, and it was never a concern. Now, further on into your pregnancy, if the baby is not growing as they expect and you're not putting on weight, then that may be of concern. I've also only gained 18lbs with all my pregnancies ( I guess that's where my body's comfortable) and am a normal healthy weight going in. My babies were always growing on track or a measuring a bit ahead, and nothing was ever mentioned about not gaining enough.
I'm not sure what advice to give you....was it actually your OB that said this or one of the nurses?

It was one of the Obs that said that. There are six in this practice. This was the first time I had seen her, and when I asked her about it she told me to look in their handbook. When I got home I looked, and sure enough it said that a person at a healthy weight needs to gain that much. I haven't gained anything yet. I am still the same weight I was before I was pregnant. She said that I am supposed to gain at least 5 lbs in the first trimester. I just don't get how they expect me to gain that much during pregnancy in a healthy way. I plan on talking to them about it at my next appointment.

I would definitely talk more about it with them. Not everyone fits into a "textbook" definition in terms of weight and what you "should" do or gain. Baby is tiny in the first tri and not really consuming a lot from your body. If you're not trying to not gain or dieting, etc, then I honestly don't see the issue.
Not every women will gain at a steady rate, either. Some will gain none in the first tri, and then gain most in either the 2nd or 3rd tri. I still, other than talking more, don't know what I'd do in that situation. It could just be that dr. Are you seeing a different one next time? They may have some different advice and a different POV on that. KUP on what they tell you.

That's ridiculous. I wouldn't think twice about it. Many people don't gain much if anything in the first tri. With Cam i didn't gain anything until the 2nd trimester. This time is a different story but i also haven't been eating healthy so i'm sure that's the reason. I also do not at all believe you have to gain between 25-30 lbs. I think that's the "recommended" amount to gain if starting at a normal weight right? If you're eating and healthy then it doesn't matter and i'm sure most other OBs will tell you the same thing!

As long as you're healthy and baby is healthy it shouldn't matter if you haven't gained much.

Considering I've LOST 14 pounds since finding out I'm pregnant because of nausea and not being able to eat anything, your DR would totally flip out on me! ha! I know it will all come back plus some once this part of the sickness goes away!

Dang, I've already lost 6 lbs. No m/s but I have been eating a lot better and have no desire for sweets (bye bye sweet tooth ). My OB actually said it was good and there is plenty of time to gain some back in the months to come.
I am overweight and I asked her what the least amount of weight I should gain, and she said 15 lbs would be just fine.
I wouldn't trust an OB that only goes "by the book." It annoys the hell out of me that after 2 ultrasounds measuring 3 days behind my EDD, they still use my EDD according to LMP

I think the weight things they set are ridiculous, i have plenty of fat to incubate this fetus, the only weight i need to gain is whatever the weight of the fetus and placenta are.

My first pregnancy the OB wanted me to gain 25-30 lbs and was constantly bugging me to eat more peanut butter to pack on the weight. I ended up only gaining 18lbs and had a 8lb 7oz baby. My second pregnancy I was sure my OB (a different one this time) would be getting on to me for not gaining weight and he never once said a thing and I only gained 11lbs and had a 7lb 8oz baby. So it obviously doesn't matter how much you gain unless you are severly underweight to begin with!

That is BS!!!!
I only gained 10 pounds with my son, and he weighed nearly 9 of that. I was incredibly sick and on Zofran. You can't order a mom to gain a certain amount. It's ludicrous.

I rarely every gain more than 1-2lbs in the first 20 weeks. Just about the time the doctor's start telling me how I need to gain more then I jump 4-5 lbs in a month and they get on me for it being to much weight at once. In the end I have always gained right between the ideal 25-30 lbs (never more than that and never less). After having 3 pregnancies follow this pattern of weight gain I just realized it is how my body handles pregnancy. In the end I am at the proper weight and so are my babies.

My doctor didn't say anything about when to start gaining weight. He did say he wants me to gain 25-30 lbs as well. In my previous pregnancies I did not gain anything for the first 4 months as I was super sick with horrible ms. This pregnancy I only have occasional slight nausea and I am always hungry. I have already gained 9 lbs!!! I'm actually upset about it I don't want to gain a ton of weight!!!

I am overweight and my doc told me that the baby would be healthy if I did not gain any weight at all. I felt horrible about at it first, it was really embarassing. I weigh 191 and am 5'6, so yes I am overweight and should not pack on 50, but I didn't realize I qualified as being too overweight to even gain pregnancy weight.
But I think that is my hormones talking right there.

I am at a healthy weight and have not gained anything at all (right down to the scale at the dr's office having identical weights for my 1st and 2nd appointments lol) I haven't had anything said to me either. I wouldn't worry till later into your pregnancy as the 1st trimester your only expected to gain 1-2lbs if I remember right.

Yeah they told me that too. I'll gain what I gain. i don't think it's sensible to purposely try and gain that amount of weight. my babies have always been in the 6 to 7 lb range despite my only gaining 20lbs... any extra i put on will just be excess i have to lose after the birth
