I went to my first OB appointment last week. I was "diagnosed" with normal pregnancy. So, I am not high risk or anything. I am 10 weeks judging by my LMP and due September 9. My doctor scheduled a transvaginal ultrasound for this Wednesday. I know I had these done in the past when I was pregnant with 2 of my other children; but that was years ago and I was considered high-risk at the time. My youngest is 9.

Just curious, is it standard practice for a vaginal ultrasound in early pregnancy?

Did you have a transvaginal ultrasound or a standard ultrasound?

Thanks for any info ladies!

I had an u/s at 9 weeks. The tech started out with a regular abdominal u/s but I think she was having a hard time and she said she couldn't see my ovaries so she wanted to do the transvaginal u/s. I think at 9/10 weeks it could go either way with what they use.

As for having early ultrasounds...it is becoming more common practice among OBs to confirm dates and viability. Not all do them though...but it seems like it happens more often now than even a few years ago.

My u/s at 6 weeks was trans-vaginal. And my u/s this Thursday at 8 weeks will be trans-vaginal. When I go back at 12 weeks it will be standard u/s.

My first ultrasound was at 6weeks3days and was transvaginal. My next one probably won't be until around 15 weeks and that should be abdominal/standard.

I had transvaginal ultrasounds in all of my pregnancies until 10 weeks. After 10 weeks they can see sufficiently by abdominal.

I had transvaginal so far with the RE's office so far. Now today is the first U/S at the OB. I think it's transvaginal as well. When I was pregnant with DD 4 years ago the OB just did a regular U/S at 11 weeks, but I think their policy has changed since.

I had a transvaginal ultrasound at 8 weeks, so I think it is a standard procedure for the first trimester.

A vaginal u/s is definitely normal this early on. I've only had vaginal ones done. Not sure what I will get done at my appt on the 15th though.

I had both. The tech started out with an abdominal and was able to see everything just fine, but switched to a transvaginal so she could just get more accurate images. This was all done at 5 weeks 5 days.

I had a transvaginal ultrasound at 7 weeks. It's standard under 10 weeks.

It'll probably depend. I was the opposite of what usually happens, LOL. I had mine at 9w2d and my uterus was much larger and higher than she expected, and my bladder was a little full, so she couldn't get a good view transvaginal. She switched to an abdominal one and was able to clearly see everything. She even looked for twins because my uterus was larger than expected. They only saw one, though! At your stage, they may try one or the other and have to switch. At 10wks, though, they should be able to see what they need with an abdominal one, so they may start with that and switch to transvaginal if needed.
