My next appointment is on the 27th I will be 11W 5D, I want to ask for an ultrasound, because at the first one DH couldn't make it & let's face it, I want to see my baby again! I have a great OB, I've only met him once but he has a great sense of humor, and he is very easy going. I wonder if I ask for an ultrasound if he will allow me to have one..Hmmmm, because I wont get another one until the last week of march!!! I really don't know how to ask him either.

It can never hurt to ask, but a lot of times, it'll come down to what insurance will cover. If there's no test being done, and you've already had the pregnancy and dating confirmed via U/S, there may be a conflict with insurance covering and the dr may not want to do it if it's not medically necessary. That being said, if you're willing to pay out of pocket for DH to see, then make sure he knows that upfront. I wouldn't be shy about asking, just come right out and do it. You never know, they may be helpful and code it as there being spotting or cramping, making it then deemed "medically necessary" for insurance. My office has been great about helping out with coding for things to hopefully let insurance cover their portion.

Unless you're actually cramping or spotting, that would be insurance fraud on their part, and is incredibly illegal...

I would ask out right. If they say no, and you still want an ultrasound, there are lots of places that will do them independently - if there's a med school near you, they sometimes do ultrasounds for $100-$200. I wouldn't personally ask my doctor to commit fraud to save me a couple hundred bucks, but that's just me.

Wow...never thought of it that way. I have always had cramping or spotting when they did my earlier than 8-10wks u/s, but I was thinking of other things I've had done. Like with my HSG, they coded it as diagnostic instead of fertility related. I was O'ing, but I kept getting cysts and painful cycles, so they coded it as diagnostic to see if my uterus was normal and tubes open. If it had been coded as fertility related, then my insurance wouldn't have covered anything. But, I've never had anything other than that. It was meant to be a more tongue and cheek comment than anything,

I know this is a board and written things are hard to express tone, but I was trying to be helpful. I'm not evil, LOL. Not wanting to start controversy at all. And, as I said, I didn't think in that manner of it being fraud. It may not be, because each dr deems what they think is medically necessary. I know some drs here do U/S at just about every appt, because that's there standard practice and insurance covers it because it's what the dr wants for treatment. Some drs don't. If the dr doesn't deem it necessary, then the insurance won't cover. It's really depends on the dr and insurance company, honestly, and what her dr sees as a necessity. Just sayin'

I do agree with your suggestion about independent U/S places, however. Mine will do a basic quick one for $50 or so. The only thing is, most of them won't schedule you until around 15-16wks, so check with the U/S places around you to make sure. They usually want you to have had at least 2 appts with your dr and have verified baby is doing good by the dr. But it could be completely different where you live!

Hmmm, I've heard some doctors doing an u/s just because the mom is nervous that everything might not be okay, and they do them. I had my first u/s at 7W 5D, He might or might not do it, either way I will be okay because he will let me listen to the heartbeat so I will know everything is fine then..I just wanted to see if they would sneak me in, but the staff is so FULL OF ATTITUDE, they're pretty rude as to what I've seen so far but my Dr. is awesome!!!

That's what my OB did... I had my first u/s at 6 weeks. She didn't "need" me to come back until my 12-week u/s but I told her I was very nervous, so I am going back for an 8-week u/s on Thursday.

Yes, there are many who do. My MW will if I'm extra nervous about something, even if we've heard the HB that appt.As jokingly as I was being about the coding comment, we have awesome insurance and they've covered whatever the dr or MW orders. Just ask your dr. I hope they give you one!! And, boo for a staff full of attitude. That really stinks when the dr is great! Can't wait for your update!
